Standard 70cl bottles. The Havana Club Anejo 7 Anos will be drunk neat, and slowly. This is real Havana Club, not the rip off the Yanks get, though, as we don't have a pathological hatred of all Cuban products over here! The others will be mixed with Coke and consumed much faster...

Mixed with diet Coke, because I'm health conscious.

It didn't last, so I bought two more bottles. Well, the Havana Club is still there, but I intend to drink that sparingly to savour. The Captain Morgan and Mount Gay I bought tonight are for more functional, though still enjoyable, drinking.

Which I shall do whilst listening to June Tabor.

I was on the rum last night too (Bundaberg rum), and may be again today/tonight. Last night, I also tried beer with lemon in it. Maybe lemon is OK with corona, but not Aussie beer :vomit: I plan to visit the Drunk Tank later today/tonight. If others are here, that would be cool. If not, I'll just mutter random drunken diatribes at no one. :)

Steophan
7th October 2011, 05:30 PM
Beer and lemon seems an odd combination. A Desperado (tequila-enhanced lager) with lime is bearable, but I can't think of one that works with lemon. I know people drink Weissbier with it sometimes, but that has enough hint of citrus on it's own, and a slice of orange would bring it out better if you insist on fruit added to it.

Or just drink Belgian cherry or raspberry beers.

Or Scottish rum cask beer, which if I haven't mentioned here before, I shall do now.

They didn't last long enough...

I have a small amount left, but am hopefully paid tomorrow and not Monday, in which case I shall buy more. It's odd how I have some high quality rum - Appleton Estate and Havana Club 7 - and I still crave Captain Morgan's! Tomorrow, it shall be mine.

I also want to try the new Bacardi Oakheart spiced rum, I've heard good things about it.

Hmm, not sure which hits me harder. What I find is that rum is better value for money, as I will like a rum at a certain price about as much as a whiskey twice the price. If I'm feeling wealthy and in the mood, I'll sometimes drink whiskey though.

Got two bottles of Captain Morgan's for £11 each today. Not the best in the world, but pretty tasty. It's nice enough to drink straight, if I take a hip flask somewhere, and delicious with coke.

You've inspired me, Steophan. Unfortunately I had no more rum, so I have cognac in my coffee instead. Hope that doesn't exclude me from the thread.

I dread to think how much that would cost!

It's actually not all that expensive--it's probably somewhere in the range of $40-$50/bottle. It's not an every-day drink, but it's definitely not an "if you have to ask..." item either. Interestingly, consensus is that it's actually better than the super-expensive Zacapa bottling.

Another very good rum is Zaya 12-year.

Just to expand the list a little, I've tried a few nice rums this year and can say that Diplomatico Reserva and English Harbour 5yr are both great for drinking straight. Rum is one of those beverages that, like Schlitz malt liquor and MD 20/20, I tend to associate with my pre-legal drinking era. Usually mixed with Coke and almost always culminating in the wet-and-dry heaves.

Granted, I never sampled anything classier than Bacardi, and nowadays I'll happily drink cachaça which is pretty darned similar, but I could live a long and relatively happy life without another drop of rum in it.
