As for the OP, this is like asking why a group of people who all went to high school keep referencing stuff that happened in high school. Sure, they talk about other stuff, but they talk about high school a lot more than you and your coworkers do, what's up with that?

The SDMB is one topic that will probably always have traction here, because it's the one thing almost every poster here has in common. And people tend to flock to threads they see getting a lot of posts, so it becomes self-sustaining after a point. No biggie -- most threads are just thinly-veiled excuses for people to make penis jokes and say rude things about other peoples' mothers anyway.

And to make up for those that hardly ever post in the BYB threads, that is almost exclusively where I post. It isn't so much that I am fixated on the dope. It is more that I have rather limited mental capacity and can't provide comment more eloquent than "durr, look he stupid!"

I like to think of myself as a lazy, fluffy kitty* with a catnip mouse. I can't work up enough energy to get a proper hate on (I'm never angry), but sometimes the catnip makes me all excited and I start batting things around for the lulz. In short: I do it because it's fun.

Part of it comes from it being damn near impossible to have any kind of critical discussion about the dope on the dope itself. Have a problem with the way the board is being run? You can only start a thread in ATMB, which either gets ignored by those in charge or drowned out by staunch supporters that always come to the rescue in such thread(see any avatar thread for example). If you say something negative, not insulting just negative about someone or doubt someone's claims in MPSIMS or IMHO and you get shouted down by the white knighters and told to take it to the pit. Even pit threads are filled with posters admonishing people for starting pit threads.

That is true for any heavy handed moderated board, especially if it is a board associated with something or someone "famous".

Also the older a board is, the more it may be that time and board evolution has selected members who are blind to their faults, but have a microscope for inspecting yours.
