This is actually somewhat older news, but it ties into what I and a few others have commented on: that moderate Republicans are starting to splinter off to their own devices.

Lincoln Chafee was a Republican Senator in Rhode Island from 2000-2006. He got dumped as part of the Republican's 2006 losses. In 2007, he went Independent. In April of this year, he started looking into running for governor (http://www.chafeeforgovernor.com/). He doesn't seem interested in forming up any new parties, though.

I wish him the best as an Independent. We need more un-affiliated members of Congress.

Joe Leiberman, while a thorn in the Democrats side, has shown we can abide a dissenting voice in chambers.

ETA: Opps. I meant as a governor.

I think the states would do much better if they had a strong Independent party that played along side of the other two.

I think the sane Republicans need to start their own party with all the moderate refugees from the GOP Talibanate. As a confirmed liberal I strongly support the concept of a loyal opposition of conservatives who are capable of reasoned dissent and measured support for sensible compromises to keep the joint running. All we have right now in control of the GOP are hard-right ideologues and spittle-flecked haters who'd burn the place to the ground if it would derail That One's administration.
