View Full Version : The Finns Are Getting Nervous

They just exited the treaty banning landmines and are upping defense spending. The obvious takeaway is they plan to put mine fields on the border with Russia and be prepared for a Russian incursion.
Putin should consult with some old-timers to find out what happened in the Winter War with Finland and how badly Russian troops got mauled.

If Russian performance in Ukraine is any indication of Russia’s military might, Finland has little to fear. Germany is likewise increasing spending on defensive measures. It looks like our NATO allies are seeing America as an unreliable ally now that the trumpanzee is headed to isolating the US from our previous commitments.
It’s going to take a long time to recover from the damage Donald J. Hitler and Elon Goebbels are causing.

The Finns won because;
1) They are some rugged motherfuckers
2) Russia had just been horribly mauled by WWII
Today I'm afraid they wouldn't stand much of a chance without NATO behind them.

On the bright side, non-US, NATO should have been doing more all along and the EU should not have been so reliant on Russian fossil fuels. So at least Putin and Trump are waking them up.

I agree, NATO should be a team effort, not merely the US. I don’t see Russia being a “boots on the ground” aggressor. They are more a stand off and lob munitions military. We’re seeing that in Ukraine. Seriously, they are emptying their prisons, importing NK troops, and generally fighting with an undisciplined force. If you think about it, their threat of going nuclear on an enemy goes a long way towards securing their borders so they can slack off on the defensive forces.
China is building invasion barges now. Those are barges that sail up close to a rocky shore line and unfold a dock/pier like extension used to unload troops or equipment. https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2025/01/china-suddenly-building-fleet-of-special-barges-suitable-for-taiwan-landings/ . I hope the US has an eye on that.
I just don’t trust Trump to undestand any of this.

"Boots on the ground" is fast becoming a moot point due to the proliferation of drone warfare. China and North Korea may outpace us in sheer manpower, but a couple of guys in a basement far from the frontlines operating a fleet of drones can even things up.

I'm afraid those days are mostly over against a military with modern jamming equipment. The front line is going to be troops with short range weapons backed up by mobile artillery, mobile rockets, and tanks. State of the art this week is drones and gun emplacements controlled by an unjammable gossamer fiber optic cable.
Rockets and glide bombs rule the skies, and the best defense for aircraft is stealth or distance. China is well geared up to hit ships and aircraft at least halfway across the Pacific, and also crank out replacement missiles rapidly. We would lose ships and they would lose their asses in a direct slugfest. They are going to wait until the US onshoring effort makes Taiwan non essential and then make their move. However I'm still looking for an embargo followed by pressure politics, because in an invasion the Taiwan military will make sure that the crown jewel chip fabs will be blasted to rubble.
I don't trust the shitgibbon to understand what's for lunch.

The Finns won the Winter War in the early stages of WWII. A key part of the planning in Barbarossa was just how badly the Finns pwn3d the Soviets.

It can't be any worse than they got mauled in Ukraine. They are also at higher casualties than they got, there. They didn't lose too many than they lost in Afghanistan. They are already over twice than the US lost in Vietnam. Give 'em a bit and they will be above what they lost in WWII. Sooner or later, they'll run out of them, and they will fertilize Ukraine's sunflowers.
No wonder Russian men are running the hell out of there.

They are rapidly running out of both.... Give 'em a few. Which will they run out of first?

Oh yes it can. As I understand it, Ukraine tends to be open and flat -- perfect for growing grain, and for trampling grain with tracked combat vehicles. Finland tends to be thickly wooded -- good for snipers, bad for mobile warfare.
I expect a potential Russian invasion of Finland to see Finns attempt to beat Simo Hayha's score.
Fun fact #1: The Soviet Army used artillery strikes to kill Hayha.
Fun fact #2: The day Hayha woke up from his coma induced by said artillery strikes was the same day the Winter War ended.
Strategic observation: Russia's invasion of Ukraine relies heavily on auxiliary troops. Should the regular line officers be unavailable, auxiliaries tend to find someplace other than the battlefield to be. Snipers seek to make line officers unavailable. Put it all together and you get the potential for severe pwnage.

You are correct sir. For some reason I thought that whole thing happened later in the war.
