View Full Version : Geez--what the hell? My second "Go Hillary Go" thread (aka-Hillary smacks China over Internet freedom)

I loathed Hillary when she was our "co-president". Could not stand her in the "Stand by your man/Vast-right wing conspiracy" mode. And her run for president made her look less sane than Lyndon LaRouche.

But the longer she's our Sec. of State, the more I'm starting to like her. (Seriously--this isn't snark. She really seems to be doing a solid job). I don't think she would have made a very good President, but she's turning into one kick-ass Sec. of State. I loved her answer to the sexist little twerp who wanted to know what her husband told her to say about some incident or other and I love her no-nonsense hard-line attitude here (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100121/tc_nm/us_google_china_10).

It's nice to see a Sec. of State with the backbone to tell China to knock it the fuck off or else

Addressing concerns about cyber spying in China that have prompted Google Inc. to threaten to quit that market, Clinton said "countries or individuals that engage in cyber attacks should face consequences and international condemnation."

"In an interconnected world, an attack on one nation's networks can be an attack on all," Clinton said.

"We look to Chinese authorities to conduct a thorough investigation of the cyber intrusions that led Google to make this announcement," she said..

And "We stand for a single Internet where all of humanity has equal access to knowledge and ideas," said Clinton in a major address that cited China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt among countries that censored the Internet or harassed bloggers.

Countries that built electronic barriers to parts of the Internet or filtered search engine results contravened the U.N.'s Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which guarantees freedom of information, she said.

Damn--I agree with her here.

I cannot believe I'm saying this but: "Hillary, you rocked here" :science:

Hillary's pretty sweet. I don't really know what she was like when Clinton was president because I didn't care about politics until my school had a mock 2000 presidential election when I was in 6th grade. But when they were all campaigning, my preferences were definitely ranked Clinton, Obama, and then Edwards. But I think the reason she's doing so well is that no one really pays attention to the Secretary of State and people forget about her so she's really given an opportunity to stretch her wings and work that job like nobody's business.

When it was being tossed around that Obama was going to give her something or another, I was pulling for Chief of Staff. I think she would have done a pretty good job of it.

Still and all, I'm agreeing with you. Even though it was revealed that there was a miscommunication about what was said to her about her husband and policy, her initial response wasn't too bad considering. I'd have liked to hear more followup from her, or a better explanation of what happened generally, but I do confess to not looking around for one after the fact. So that might just be me.

Awww...and now China's all butthurt about Hillary. :(

"Sino-U.S. ties have been impacted," Shi Yinhong, an international relations professor at Renmin University in Beijing, said of Washington's push on Internet controls.

"China has admitted there are areas where it can improve, and then Clinton made her comments in a public venue, comparing us to Egypt and Saudi Arabia," he added. "So I think over the past year Clinton's speech is the most undiplomatic thing she's said."

So very, very sad. She probably won't be invited to Chinese New Year or will be banned from eating Mu-Shu Pork or something. :(

:D

I think this role suits Hill very well. Had she become President, she likely would have been the politician we were all fearing, but as SoC she seems to truly want to be a public servant (there's a difference, dammit). The role of diplomacy is to achieve our goals with negotiation if at all possible all while not appearing to roll over. With the exception of a few early gaffes she has struck a good balance. I think she's representing our country well.

She is, at heart, a workaholic policy addict. Has more than a touch of OCD about her (which can come across as "control freak" or even "power-hungry nutcase") but mostly harnesses that to being detailed and fully read up and finding solutions that work.

She's probably make a good programmer, come to think of it :)
