Aah. Well, it's a way to have a conversation with one other person, in a pseudo-public fashion. You can post a Visitor Message on someone else's profile. If they do that with you, you can click View Conversation. Then, whenever you post messages inside that conversation space, your posts go to their visitor messages, and vice versa. When you get posts to your area, you get a notification. So it's somewhere between posting on a thread, and sending a PM. Of course, other people could read it, and post to either one of your visitor message areas, starting a new conversation.
