How did just being Dixie become racist? Unless equating Southern as being inherently racist. The South was Dixie long before the civil war. And it has little to do with the landed slave holding Gentry. Dixie is the poor hardscrabble Scots- Irish barely looked better upon than the Negro slaves themselves.

To the extent Dixie represents "typical Southern attitudes", I can understand why some would want to distance themselves from the term. Perhaps this is what The Dixie Chicks had in mind.

YouTube is going a bit overboard. I watch a chess master's channel where he analyses tournament games. He just had a video pulled because he made a comment like "White is more powerful here" referring to the layout of the board. And a few other comments referencing black and white (the chess pieces). Of course, YouTube is an algorithm that looks for hate statements, and black and white comments apparently triggered it. He appealed and instantly lost. It wasn't until his followers started mailing YouTube that he was allowed to repost the video. I suppose chess pieces will have to be repainted gold and silver now just to be safe.

I can remember going to Sambo's as a kid too, and seeing the drawings on the walls. I didn't know there was anything racist about it. I can actually remember getting read that book in school in first or second grade (that would have been the early 1970s in Louisiana), so I just saw the restaurant then as being no different than if if it was based on Disney characters or something, no different from Song of the South or Jungle Book images which were also ubiquitous and seen as innocuous at that time. I didn't know any of that stuff was racist when I was a kid because nobody ever talked about or pointed it out.

I heard somebody at work just yesterday specifically saying that Quaker Oats should have to change too, and they were saying it unironically because they were offended that Aunt Jemima was changing. People are actually making argument seriously, not as a joke.

If the comparison is meant to be satirical, it doesn't work, because satire has to be based on some kind of truth. Satire show absurdity or flaw in a position. False equivalency always fails as satire because if the comparison is not valid then there's no truth being pointed out. What we are talking about here is not properly identifiable as "humor" so much as what we call a 'strawman fallacy." An absurd oversimplification is made, the oversimplification is exemplified with a false comparison and the false comparison is supposed to show that the initial position is absurd.

Aunt Jemima never offended me. I never gave it any thought at all, but as a white guy, I have the luxury of never having* to notice things like that. There are a million little micro-aggressions like that that black people have to deal with every day, a million encounters with enough ambiguity or deniability that make it not worth it to try to call out every individual case. It's a life of being constantly gaslighted and told things are not racist no matter how racist it looks. White people won't ever admit ANYTHING is racist and then when any specific example is called out, it's always immediately ridiculed as overly sensitive or paranoid or politically motivated or crazy. No one is allowed to admit anything is racist anymore without getting screamed at and called an "SJW" or a "virtue signaler" or a "white knight" or any of those other terms that, as far as I can tell, just means "not a sociopath."
