Give It Up For A Week Poll

Pick one to do without for 7 days.

forgot the poll (again)

jali 23rd August 2010 12:43 PM

That was easy for me - I don't own a microwave oven.

To be fair, I'd give up my cell phone for a week.

mlerose 23rd August 2010 12:44 PM

I could give up any of those for a week, but internet and music would be the most difficult to do without.

Dragonlady 23rd August 2010 12:48 PM

I don't have cable or satellite TV, so that's kind of a cheat. I really don't listen to music either, so I wouldn't miss that.

severe delays 23rd August 2010 12:50 PM

Well my phone is currently somewhere in the care of the Royal Mail and seems to be stuck in a vortex over NE England so I picked that one.

Parthenokinesis 23rd August 2010 12:51 PM

Microwave. I usually only use to reheat yesterdays coffee. I can make a fresh pot for a week. I use my cable almost not at all, but it hosts my internet connection, which I would not care to live without.

SmartAleq 23rd August 2010 12:58 PM

I don't have cable tv, I can do without music if needs be (it's really only a hassle in the car) and I seldom use the microwave. Of the other two, I can do without my cell phone pretty well. Do not wish to give up internet, unless I'm someplace where it's so spectacular I don't give a shit!

HongKongFooey 23rd August 2010 01:04 PM

I don't own a microwave either but if I did I could go without it for a week quite easily.

Taur 23rd August 2010 01:07 PM

Apparently I'm at home on the information highway.

I wouldn't want to be without music for a week, but it'd be easy to go without.

Solfy 23rd August 2010 01:20 PM

I voted I could give up all but the internet, but I have recently gone almost that long with the net for about a week while on vacation. I have tons of music in my head to entertain me and an audiobook plays in my car right now. The microwave loss would be a nuissance if I were the one doing all the cooking, but that's what I have a househusband for. I haven't turned my cellphone on in over a week, no problem there. Lately I've been wondering if Verizon has a package that would enable me to give up cable but still keep the internet and unlimited landline for not an outrageous amount of money. With NetFlix I've abandoned regular television.

Any/all of them.

Panacea 23rd August 2010 01:28 PM

I kept cell phone and internet because they're vital to my business. If I don't work, I don't eat.

I picked the other three to do without (music, TV, microwave).

Yeah, what he said...

Although once the new school year starts, I'll need the internet if I want to keep working.

Well, I don't have a portable music player or cable, so those are easy.

I don't use the microwave for weeks on end.

When I go on vacation, I don't use my mobile or the internet for 2-3 weeks at a go.

Harry 23rd August 2010 01:35 PM

I have all of them...the internet is all I use, and that because of boredom.

PapSett 23rd August 2010 01:37 PM

Don't use my cell phone & don't have cable TV. Onky use my microwave to make popcorn.

Couldn't go without the internet tho!

bufftabby 23rd August 2010 01:58 PM

Cell phone and music are the only necessities there. Cell phone, because I don't have a home phone. Music, because there's no reason to go without. I don't use my MP3 player, so it's not as though I'm hooked on the convenience of it or anything.

Giraffe 23rd August 2010 02:02 PM

I could easily live without a microwave for a week. Internet would be by far the hardest -- I know this because we had some problems with our Internet last year and I couldn't believe how many times I kept trying to look something up online before I'd remember. It was sad.

Euryphaessa 23rd August 2010 02:25 PM

I'm not getting cable installed in my new apartment, I know I can easily live without it for months. I don't really use the microwave all that much at home, either (the one at work is a different story, but I didn't count that).

I can't do without my cell phone, right now because it's the main way I communicate with my boyfriend, and next week when I move to his city, I won't have a landline. Internet is obviously essential, and I would hate to be without music.

Falcon 23rd August 2010 03:01 PM

I could do without any of those for a week. I would miss music the most, I think. Followed by the microwave. I don't have cable and don't want it. I barely use my cellphone, and when I go on vacation, I'm happy to not have a computer with me.

Everyone who expected this to be a thread about sex/masturbation, raise your hand.

Easiest for me would be the microwave, I do use it regularly but there are so many other meal options that a lack baked potatos/waffles with warm syrup wouldn't be a big deal for a week.

GoSmoke 23rd August 2010 04:01 PM

It would have to be my cell phone because there is no way in hell I could give up the others. Everyone who knows me knows my email address so they could get me if they needed to. A week without the internet? holy shit ,no, that would mean I might have to actually *talk* to Mr. Smoke.

iampunha 23rd August 2010 04:34 PM

I cook via microwave (the wife can't be expected to drive home every time I am hungry, natch) so much that I think I'd rather give up my right foot for a week than give up my microwave.

I use the phone to respond to job calls and talk to the wife when she isn't here -- but not for, like, calling friends or texting etc. So I can't give that up because it would be impractical, not because I live on the phone.

Internet is a nonstarter. If the Internet's down at work, I can't do my job. And if the Internet is down here, boredom sets in fast.

I don't have an iPod, and I would give up cable if the wife were OK with it, so those two could die easily.

IDOL 23rd August 2010 04:38 PM

I picked giving up the cellphone...mine goes for weeks on end without ringing, anyway
*in pouty sing-song voice: nobody loves me, everybody hates me, I think I'll go eat worms :grossout:

** that smiley says it's "grossout", but it looks more like someone sobbing hysterically, so from now on, since we don't have a boo-hoo smiley, I hereby dedicate the grossout smiley as a stand-in :D

Wolf Larsen 23rd August 2010 06:27 PM

I could do without any of them but internet access. Try to take that away and we're gonna have a firepower situation.

Trepa Mayfield 23rd August 2010 07:43 PM

I can't help but wonder if the results are a tad skewed because of the location of the poll...

Anyway, I need the internet to get to school*. The rest I could do without.

*Bus schedules. I need 5 different sets, and holy crap is it complicated without the website.

Elyanna 23rd August 2010 09:55 PM

I don't generally watch TV or listen to much music, so I wouldn't be giving up anything there. The microwave would be easy to give up, aside from having cold leftovers. I can do without internet for a week, I'm just not happy about it. I haven't been away from my phone for more than a day or two in 5 years. I'm not sure how I'd cope.

Sleel 23rd August 2010 10:24 PM

I see I'm not alone. I could give up just about everything but internet for a week. I don't have cable, and very very rarely use a microwave, so those are easy to give up. I don't use my iPhone for phone calls anywhere near as much as I use it for other stuff, so I could do without the ability to make calls with it for a week, easily.

I can and have done without internet access for a couple of weeks, but it isn't fun. I'm so used to having access to information and communication through it that I'm seriously inconvenienced by doing without.

Zombies! 24th August 2010 01:44 AM

Microwave

I can live without it, we did for a couple of years before I got one for free.

I watch TV while I'm on the internet. I don't like silence, so TV or music is important :D

Internet. Fuck no. I'll give you a kidney.

Xploder 24th August 2010 05:43 AM

Not too tough for me...no cell phone, don't watch the box but the internet connection would seriosuly fuck with my ability to acquire even more quantities of useless crap in Kingdom of Loathing so that would be hard.

I need my music and microwave as until I get my damn back fixed, I am broken and can neither cook or go out in my shop and build something, which sucks.

DogMom 24th August 2010 06:50 AM

I can't believe how many can go without music for a week. SRSLY? You could go a week without singing anything? Man....that'd SUCK. I can't go a DAY without music.

So yeah, take the Cable, I haven't had it for a couple years anyway, take my cellphone, but do not take my music.

Veb 24th August 2010 07:10 AM

The internet is the only one of those choices I'd miss much. I know this because my cable access sucks. Drives me nuts to not be able to look up stuff, noodle around, handle my banking, etc.

Just cancelled my satellite TV because I literally hadn't turned on the tube in 6 months. Hate talking on the phone so the cell is just a security blanket for emergencies. Microwave is marginal; only use it occasionally to reheat leftovers or make popcorn. Can listen to music other ways and of course sing, very badly.

Borborygmi 24th August 2010 08:14 AM

No unique commentary to offer here, but if I vote, I explain myself, dammit!

Surely I could give them all up for a week if I absolutely had to, but I voted for cell phone, cable TV, and microwave. Cell phone is mostly for emergencies, I don't have cable, and I can make sure I drink my coffee quickly enough for a week that it won't need a zap.

Still no iPod, but my commute would suck without music. And I've already used the Internet a few times this morning to find out stuff for my job.

3acres 24th August 2010 09:17 AM

I voted cell phone, microwave, and cable TV. That's probably cheating, since I don't have any of those, anyway. No ipod type thingy, either, but I do still have a stereo and hundreds of LPs. I could go without music and the internet for a week or more...I had to after the tornado and one of the ice storms we had. But I wouldn't do it by choice. DogMom, I sing all the time, but I'm not sure anyone would call it music.

Colonel Plink 24th August 2010 09:19 AM

TV. Seriously.

I don't watch enough of it to miss it.

Nebelhund 24th August 2010 09:03 PM

TV helps pass the time until the great noodly one comes to take me home, so not satellite. Microwave is helpful in creating delicious popcorn so thats not it. Internet is like one of my children so no. Music is a possibility but...cell phone can bite me. Paid for by work and they buy great phones (HTC Evo currently) to play with but its just a toy. I may use it a handful times a month, mostly to ask my wife which type of pads she wanted as there are about 500 different styles at the store.

Radical Edward 24th August 2010 09:09 PM

I don't have cable television, so that was easy.

You can have my internet connection when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Sleeps With Butterflies 24th August 2010 10:33 PM

I picked everything but cell phone.

Locked In The Trunk Of A Car 26th August 2010 02:30 AM

I've lived without all of those for far more than a week at many different times during the past three years. I've had no internet at home for a year and a half and have certainly gone a week without using it. I don't have cable or an iPod either. The microwave gets used about once a week; the cell phone not much more. I'm such a Luddite. :sciencefail:
