When I see the word PALIN in a headline...

Forgive me if this topic has been done to death. I've been away for a few months.

But it's like, I dunno, addictive, compelling. I have to read. Even if I know it'll be more of the same ol' same ol'. Is it a bit of schadenfreude? Voyeurism? Do I need to be in therapy? Can anybody else relate?

HongKongFooey 18th November 2010 06:03 PM

The word PALIN makes me weep for America. Even when it's about the "other" famous Palin.

Zeener Diode 18th November 2010 06:09 PM

The word PALIN makes me think of a cold, cold place.

Chacoguy 18th November 2010 06:22 PM

The tags are awesomesauce. :)

eleanorigby 18th November 2010 06:35 PM

I have the exact opposite reaction: I blench and become slightly nauseated. Only quickly turning the page or distracting myself stops me from vomiting.

Random Precision 18th November 2010 07:06 PM

When I see the word Palin in a headline, I remind myself how expensive dentist visits are and unclench my jaw.

Cassatt 18th November 2010 07:17 PM

I squee 'cause I loooove Michael Palin. He's my favorite Python.

Yes, I live in denial. I've even boycotted one of my favorite TV shows, Dancing With the Stars, this season to maintain the illusion...

Even John Cleese has apologized to Michel Palin as he noticed that Michael is no longer the funniest Palin around.

She is like a trained parrot, beautiful plumage though. :)

Islander 19th November 2010 05:02 AM

Well, at least I generated some winning tags.

Doyle 19th November 2010 05:10 AM

I just scan it for pictures.

Bodhiman 19th November 2010 06:03 AM

I follow suit with the odd voyeurism. I am possibly the lone Conservative on the 'Raffe, but even I wish she'd just shut up and be hot. Not bad as eye-candy, but completely un-electable and lacking any serious contribution to the political debate. Same for Bristol and that Meghan McCain chick. Nice to look at, but I don't really care about their thoughts, beliefs or values. I only open the tabloids in hopes that some paparazzi snapped a decent down-blouse shot.:innocent:

mswas 19th November 2010 06:16 AM

I only pay attention once in a while. Mostly to read funny snark.

There is a need to refudiate what she says from time to time but those who beat me to the punch are legion.

Muffin 19th November 2010 06:28 AM

When I see the word PALIN, I think of a Reality TV show in which dysfunctional people are put into a tense situation. Then I shudder at the thought of it being reality rather than Reality TV. That this person is taken seriously by millions of Americans, and that she was and again may be a contender for very high office, is truly disconcerting.

Veb 19th November 2010 07:03 AM

I read about Palin because I'm a masochist. She's the trainwreck that just keeps happening. I thought no one could top Michelle Bachmann for pure insanity but Palin pulls it off--and some people still take her seriously. That's the part I don't get. Maybe it's because she's very telegenic. But it's mind-boggling that anyone truly thinks she's anything but a loon.

And photogenic.

There are a few of us here. Lonely souls, to be sure, but here nonetheless.

Uthrecht 19th November 2010 08:58 AM

Well yeah, we know you three brothers are conservatives. But I think at least a couple of you are progressives, so it's okay.

As an aside, I continue to comment half-jokingly that both Clinton and Obama were secretly progressive conservatives and not liberals. I wonder if that would make a good thread.

ETA: My problem with Palin is not that she's positioned as a conservative. Or even that she's positioned as a far-right conservative. My problem is that I have continually failed to get the impression that she has considered her political beliefs or how they work. Take any position you want in the political spectrum, but please be prepared to explain them and discuss them (level-headedly, I don't expect you to have to take somebody yelling at you).

Now, I will also admit that *my* standard for what constitutes a well-thought-out position is not necessarily *her* standard, or anyone else's.

Ooh, you've done it now!

'puna is a Militant, Flaming Liberal.

And it's "Okay" to be whatever the fuck we want to be, regardless of what your limp-wristed political leanings lead you to think.

With all do respect, that is.

Uthrecht 19th November 2010 09:07 AM

He just says that to fit in with the news crowd. Lookit him out with his tractor. I suspect he's a Blue Dog Democrat.

But don't worry about how limp-wristed my political leanings are. I'll always give you a reach-around.

Those are the knee-jerk fans who are unable to differentiate between content-free clichés & platitudes, and actual thoughtful statements. They eat up that corn about God & country & my wonderful family & my precious children (including the one she calls "the Retard" behind closed doors). When cornered and asked for an explanation, these fans can only say, "I like her!"

Mako 19th November 2010 09:21 AM

Seems to me that "Why I want to Fuck Ronald Reagan" needs an update.

EDIT: Quote fail.

And let's not forget where those corn kernels have been picked out from.

... I think to myself, "Palindrome would be an interesting name for an arena."

(Actually not, but the notion just occurred to me and I thought I'd share [or dump, if you prefer].)

Why, it would indeed. It connotes a place where thrilling adventures might be witnessed.

Until you run it through your Thought Processing Machine and it clogs up all the gears.

That's why we have filters.

Or, failing that: a brain flush.
