Barrett's Privateers
Inspired by, "I almost started a thread, then decided not to", and fueled by a desire to share my favourite drinking song, Barrett's Privateers (as mentioned in "I got taken advantage of"), I'm going to attempt to start a thread with an embedded video.
<iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/G-PQbdmQRwc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Cheers! |
And... the embedding didn't work (because I'm such a noob and I don't know what I'm doing.). :( Oh well.
Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-PQbdmQRwc |
I read some of the comments. I fear the link.

If you put the tags [ m] [ /m] without spaces on either side of the link, it should embed.

Also, I love Barrett's Privateers ever since my visit to Toronto in 2001 when I heard it being sung by an Irish Punk band in a bar and everyone in the bar started singing along. My friend with whom I was visiting told me the original was done by Stan Rogers, so I looked for a Stan Rogers CD in a music store, bought it, and never looked back.

Thanks mlerose!!!

It's a great song. You don't even have to be drunk to enjoy it. I sing it in the shower most mornings.

That's not the version I have in my head. Did Makem and Clancy ever sing this? Or Battlefield Band? Somebody else? *confused*
|
KidV I'm guessing it's been covered quite a bit, but Stan Rogers wrote it. :)
|
The original song is commonly hijacked and claimed to be a true tale (it isn't) in the history of _______ country. The Scots are notorious for taking liberties with this song in particular. Place names are replaced with relevant local towns, Elcid's name is changed, etc.
All in good fun, and who could blame them? It's a great song. |
|
An Aussie punk/folk band called Wedding's Parties Anything also do a cracking version, but I can't find it online :(
|
There's a parody of Barrett's Privateers called Garnet's Home Made Beer, by English-Canadian folk singer Ian Robb.
|
Ha, that was great!
|
I consider myself quite the music buff and I had never heard this song until now. What a great, great tune. Thank you.
|
Haj, check out the other stuff by Stan Rogers. My other favorite of his is "45 years" and it makes me so sad every time I listen to it.

We'd fire no tongues, shed no skin I'm a broken frog on a lilypad pier, the last of Barrett's Ribbeteers |
I found this for Salambo:

I might as well put in another plug for stanfest on the off chance that someone finds themselves in Cape Breton around Canada Day one of these days. It's one of the funnest parties around here. :)

No, it wasn't these guys, but this was a great version anyway! |

No, I knew Toronto is in Canada, I just didn't know Canada was part of Ireland. Damn English/British/UK/Commonwealth stuff always confuses me. ;) |
Ah. Perhaps I should have clarified that the STYLE of the band was Irish Punk. I don't know where the band was from, but I assume Canada.

The Irish Descendants, who do a fine cover of Barrett's Privateers, are from Newfoundland. |
