Looking Glass Rules

  • Days will be 5 24-hr periods long; Nights will be 2 24-hr periods long. Day One start will be determined when signups are complete.
    • Starting Day 3 (or when fewer than 50% of the original players are left, whichever comes first), players may vote: hammer; if a 90% consensus is reached the hammer will be broughten and Day will end early.
  • Nights are fluff only, with following caveats:
    • Players may claim a role, and subsequent discussion of that claim will be allowed.
    • Players may claim a result of their own actions, and subsequent discussion of that claim will be allowed.
    • Players with access to off-board methods of communication are not limited to Day or Night strategy on those boards.
  • Only sanctioned methods of off-board communication are allowed. Under no circumstances may players PM each other about game-related issues.
  • If at all possible, Night actions should be to the moderator via PM by no later than one hour before Night end.
    • Night actions should be confirmed by the mod. If not, send a reminder.
  • Non-participants will get one Final Vote per day of non-participation; Final Votes may not be removed under any circumstances, carry from Day to Day and are cumulative. Please don't sign up if you don't intend to play.
  • Rule violation penalties will be on a sliding scale; the first violation by any player will result in a one-Day Penalty Vote; second violations, even if by a different player, will result in one two-Day Penalty Vote, and all subsequent violations by any players will result in one Final Vote.
    • Editing of posts for spelling, grammar, duplicate posts, borked code, or forgotten thoughts will be allowed.
  • You may post your role PM or any correspondence with the Mod.
  • Quoting from sanctioned off-board methods of communication is allowed.
  • There is no Recruitment in this game.
  • Voting:
    • One vote per player.
    • Vote on a new line using vote: Bold and Blue and unvote using unvote: Bold and Red.
    • If you have a vote down, you must unvote before voting a new candidate. The first vote will continue to be in effect until removed.
    • There are no vote shenanigans in this game. If you see an error in the vote count, please PM the mod or post in-thread and the mod will double-check.
    • Ties will be resolved using the following method: The player who received the most votes during the day will be the lynch candidate.
      • If both players received the same number of maximum votes, the person who received the first vote during the day will be the lynch candidate.
      • Final Votes and Penalty Votes do not count as "first votes" for purposes of tiebreaking.
    • Vote counts will be expressed as:
Player receiving votes (total votes, max votes): player 1 voting [post voted], player 2 voting [post voted, post unvoted]...player n voting [post voted]
  • In-thread comments or questions for the mod should be in Bold and Green

Many, many thanks to Pleonast and Catinasuit for helping me beat this setup into shape.

Sample Town PM

You are an Oyster.

”But wait a bit,” the Oysters cried,
”Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!”
”No hurry!” said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.

You are Vanilla Town.

Your power is in your vote. If you lynch the right people, you may survive to the end of the story. If not...well. Tragedies happen.

Town wins when all threats to Town are eliminated.

so i guess CIAS won't be joining us this time around.

SisterCoyote 6th November 2012 08:23 AM

No, unfortunately.

Chucara 9th November 2012 11:54 AM

Politician? Don't know that role.

SisterCoyote 9th November 2012 12:08 PM

No worries, since it is NOT in the game (oh, boy, did I learn my lesson with vote manipulators in Wonderland), but a Politician can "buy" votes. Usually this means a specific player is instructed that they have to "Vote X" during the Day phase and cannot change their vote.

There are also variants where the politician "charges" a player (e.g., their vote counts as two) and so forth.

RULES ADDENDUM
  • Public "nudges" of MIA players on other boards will not accrue a penalty but it has to be somewhere I can get to to see the "nudge" (e.g., Facebook, Idle, etc.)

usually a vote manipulator. he buys a player's vote or has an extra vote. something along those lines.

Facebook will be a little difficult if we're not all friends. if we post on the Psycopath group, you'll see it though.

<snipped>

well i don't know about broughten but finding 90 percent of these characters reaching a concensus would be pretty durn amazing. i imagine if i offered free beer we'd be lucky to get to 60 percent without some amount of belly aching.

or are we talking in some sort of weird olde english dialect.

i swear to all that is holy that i merely typed in "understand" and i got the following.

thoughts, sis?

peekercpa 10th November 2012 03:55 PM

neta: and fucking "war wolves", "danish gang" and "ordinals". ok, i am already confused.

sis will this be clarified before we kick off?

SisterCoyote 10th November 2012 04:22 PM

Peeker, I have no idea what I am supposed to be clarifying, I'm sorry.

oh shit, i thought i was still supposed to be annoying people on idle's board. whoops, too many games at one time.

peekercpa 10th November 2012 06:12 PM

and since we have a "danish gang" does that mean ulla is playing?

peeker should hit himself with a hammer. it won't help us understand him but hopefully it will keep him quiet.

No, a quiet peeker makes me nervous.

Sister, are posts required to be in English?
And if so, will Olde English be acceptable?

... And Peeker, I prefer the anti-authoritarian angry Nicholson:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wtfNE4z6a8

SisterCoyote 11th November 2012 10:32 AM

Yes, posts are required to be in English.

Olde English is a bit far back. Middle English and forward will be fine.

peekercpa 11th November 2012 11:42 AM

mod question: are the potential characters and roles meant to be exclusive/inclusive/orwhadthehekeva or just indicative?

well then this might prove to be helpful.

The main pitfall in translating Middle English is not the unfamiliar words but the words which look the same and mean something different (e.g. nice means 'foolish', do can mean 'cause to' or 'put'). If your translation doesn't make sense, look up the words you think you understood.

It follows from this that it is often misleading to translate a Middle English word by the word which has descended from it in Modern English; and even where the basic sense has remained the same, the overtones may be different (in particular, a word which was in ordinary colloquial usage in Middle English may seem archaic to us: e.g. thou). Always translate sense-for-sense, not word-for-word.

In the same way, word-order which was normal in the Middle Ages (whether in ordinary prose or in poetry) can seem unnatural and contorted if carried over to your translation; you should feel free to modernize it (though make sure you have understood the syntax of the original first).

Middle English uses inflexions to indicate grammatical relationships to a greater degree than Modern English, so it's important that you should be aware of the implications of different inflexional forms. In particular, make sure that you can recognize the different forms of the personal pronouns and the basic verb-endings, both of which can vary from dialect to dialect in Middle English (see below). You will need a knowledge of both, for instance, to recognize impersonal verbs (often without a preliminary 'it' or 'there'): e.g. him liketh doesn't mean 'he likes' but 'it pleases him', me thinketh not 'I think' but 'it seems to me'.

i like sis she is nice.

but i am puzzled about "inflexional forms". does this mean that one or both partners have not achieved some sort of kama sutra type of balance or whether they just need to stretch out a little more?

peekercpa 11th November 2012 11:52 AM

neta: and i can already assure you that me thinketh and me liketh are going to be pivotal in this contest.

SisterCoyote 11th November 2012 12:52 PM

Primarily indicative.

Except those not appearing in the game; those are definitive.

peekercpa 11th November 2012 03:05 PM

tough shit folks this is voluntary.

so peekkid numero quatro is off to new mexico on a school trip. the school she goes to basically requires every class to take a week away from the nest. the vet parents are in one group and the newb parents in another. the newbs are all kind of freaky about them being gone for a week. the vets are like, thank og. but even with the vets there are divisions. the mothers are like did you remember your toothbrush? do you have enough underwear? will you be warm enough? the father vets are over in the corner dishing out pretzels letting the little birds know that when you get to el paso by bus these will be like gold.

Zeener Diode 11th November 2012 03:13 PM

I wish my grammar school offered to whisk me away for a week. (Well, I did Outdoor School but that was 6th grade.)

Why NM? Expose them youngsters to art in Taos? Visit some mud huts? Why not stay in Tejas?

well they used to go to zacatecas in old mexico but i think the whole murder and child sex slavery thing has shied some folks off from that.

curd, z they get to go to white sands and get all ictchy scratchy. then they are put up in santa fe with just four to a room (crud the last time i did i think there were twelve derelicts going to bet the ponies). then they have to do some "school art" related projects. read, texting on your phone while you walk a fucking museum. and shoot they do the texas thing but not until their junior and senior years. first year was the heifer project in arkansas. can safely assure you the number 4 will not be going back to arkansas unless its to piss on her way to maine or michigan.

peekercpa 11th November 2012 03:57 PM

and remember z this is the international school of the americas. now certainly texas has everything that one would need and more (ask 'bama). but even us rednecks and yokels like our kids to see how the rest of the world has fucked things up. that way they come home and make us real kick ass. gig 'em. roll back tide. roll back.

It was in the spoiled thread for the All Star Gastard's Revenge game that just finished on Idle's board. Luckily for me, it wasn't in the main thread, so most people never saw it.
