Turkey!!!!

And I get it tonight!

Hey. That's what I'm thankful for. That, and a warm place to hand out during the upcoming ice storm.

Could somebody help me with this refrigerator door? thx

That's what *I* said! :cluck:

ryevermouthbitters 25th November 2015 08:12 AM

I'm thankful that a 14.5 pound bird fit in my saddlebag.

Jules 25th November 2015 08:57 AM

Mine got significantly downsized this year, so I've cut back on my cooking. It's hardly more than a regular dinner now, and I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do with myself.

BJMoose 25th November 2015 09:31 AM

Ours is a bit smaller than usual since it originally looked like there'd be just four people here. But someone finally figured out that if we did it tonight the younger girl and her boyfriend can make it, too.

So turkey might be a bit tight this year. (Though that hasn't kept a certain cat from flossing his teeth in anticipation.)

Queen Tonya 25th November 2015 09:31 AM

I have to work tonight so I'm trying to get as much done this morning as possible.

Plus- my husband took my list and went to the store for me!

Minus- I didn't realize I needed to write the list so that anyone but me would understand it, so he missed a few things, and the store was out of a few things, so a whole 'nother trip needs to be made. Ugh.

Despotic Harridan 25th November 2015 10:28 AM

I am what you'd expect given my name here---THRILLED to be getting out of the family gathering. My brother decided to have it on Friday for his convenience, but I work Friday. Oh frabjous day!! I want to sloth tomorrow, in my nightie all day except to go out and get the giant log of recycling, also known as the black Friday newspaper. I will have some cookie dough ice cream for breakfast, preferably when I wake up sometime after 10a, then cook a tiny turkey breast and spend time doing nothing the rest of the day.

JimNightshade 25th November 2015 11:35 AM

I am jealous of you people. Thanksgiving is not a thing over here, but it sure sounds yummy.

:cluck:

krisolov 25th November 2015 01:39 PM

It certainly can be, if done right! You should try it some time.

We're much smaller this year too, but at least I get to stay home and do the cooking! Nothing special; I have a 6 lb turkey breast brining. There will only be 3 of us.

However there will still be copious amounts of sausage stuffing and gravy, because I'm in charge and I get to make sure there's extra good stuff.

Amythyst 25th November 2015 02:56 PM

Mom used to baste the turkey with a mixture of melted butter and white wine, but it's become way too rich for all of us now that we've switched to healthier diets. So we'll be having "regular" roast turkey tomorrow. :)

My brother and his wife are coming for dinner, but they'll only be staying a few hours. We're all relieved.

Jaglavak 25th November 2015 08:32 PM

Pies are in the oven as we speak. Two pumpkin, one mince, and one blueberry. And about a gallon of homemade cranberry sauce. I don't want any shortages tomorrow.

Khampelf 26th November 2015 03:15 AM

Today's menu is Potatoes au gratin with turkey ham chunks. We also have a pound of thinly sliced hickory smoked turkey. I ran out for a pumpkin pie last night after assuring myself the can of Redi-Whip was still good. I'll steam some broccoli for a veggie. We're not huge eaters, here.

BJMoose 26th November 2015 07:09 AM

There was enough meat to go around. Curiously, a couple of staples were missing this year (green bean craparole and deviled eggs - pickles, too, though that may have been an oversight) but they were not missed. A good time was had by all.

Bullwinkle's Cat 26th November 2015 07:09 AM

Two paws up!

Amythyst 26th November 2015 08:17 AM

Glad to hear your gathering went well, Moose. :)

I prepped the mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots while my mom got the turkey ready for the oven. Now I'm sitting on the patio enjoying the sunshine.

Wolf Larsen 26th November 2015 09:29 AM

I chopped three onions and two heads of celery for the stuffing.
The two pecan pies are done and the second pumpkin pie is baking.

Musicat 26th November 2015 09:52 AM

America was discovered by an Italian, and named for an Italian. Therefore, I'm having a pizza today. And I'm thankful for it.

Even if it is leftovers. I celebrated yesterday.

Scuba Ben 26th November 2015 09:56 AM

Uh, Muse, he was Genoan. They hated being called Italian, that would've implied fealty to the Papal States.

We're going to my folks tonight. My brother is in town and has been cooking up a storm. I hope the storm includes enough poultry to satisfy this meatitarian.

So do Genoans eat pizza? I hopal that's not too Papal.

So...

Higglety, Pigglety,
Christopher (Genoan)
Wondered aloud
What to do about lunch.

His wander was yearning,
His stomach was churning,
Pizza! He said,
Scuba Ben, thanks a bunch!

Mom said she used the butter-wine baste in this recipe, but with one stick of butter instead of three. It looks like you'll need cheesecloth to try it.

Glazer 26th November 2015 03:44 PM

I got a fresh sack of greens.

Ulrike Guggenheim 26th November 2015 04:15 PM

I usually eat green chile stew for Thanksgiving, as I figure that's what the pilgrims would have eaten had they arrived in New Mexico. One of my friends made some this year. I also sometimes make corn pudding but skipped it this year due to the world's slowest metabolism.

Chacoguy 26th November 2015 04:32 PM

How the fuck can someone be an hour late for thanksgiving dinner? I told them the time days ago WTF?

BTW way, I'm supplying all of the food and doing the cooking.

I googled right after I posted that and came up with the same site! I will definitely give it a try tomorrow. (ye gods-3 sticks of butter?!)

That's just damned rude. TH has an uncle who still does this--arrives 1-2 hours late for Tgiving or Christmas. That whole family is..... special. :rigs: I'm sorry that happened to you. I hope you sat down to dinner on time and let them have leftovers!

krisolov 26th November 2015 05:16 PM

I am thankful for my friends. They help me celebrate the good things in life and help console me in times of sorrow.

It happens all the time in my tribe. We usually wait half an hour or so and then dig in without them. No big deal.

I see you haven't met my family. . . .

Chacoguy 26th November 2015 07:22 PM

They just left, as you know, for a good thanksgiving dinner, timing is everything. So, they were way late but I really had just the turkey going at that point, so I could 'hover' it. They finally showed up and I went on to finish the meal. I was down to the 5 min mark, rolls etc. and they fucking left!

I'm like, fuck this, and delivered all of the components right on time. I purposely overfed the dogs first and made a plate for myself and sat down to the Blues Brothers. Later, the wander in, I shut down the movie and help them serve themselves. They eat the meal with their noses buried in their phones; an hour goes by, "You guys done?' Yeah.

I then collect their dishes wash them as well as all the cookware and the kitchen. They stare at their phones while the pie cools. They serve themselves pie and leave. I collect their dessert plates and an open can of coke precariously balanced on the arm of the couch.

This is how you react to a free Thanksgiving Dinner? :lawn:

Jaglavak 27th November 2015 01:02 AM

That would be ridiculously rude even for a summer BBQ. I would not invite those folks again.

Amythyst 27th November 2015 04:38 AM

Chacoguy, were these guests relatives or friends? I'm just curious; their behavior was unbelievably rude regardless of your relationship with them.

JackieLikesVariety 27th November 2015 05:33 AM

got to be family, I'm thinking friends wouldn't do that.

Khampelf 27th November 2015 06:06 AM

Did they say "Thanks" at least, Chaco?

Chacoguy 27th November 2015 10:15 AM

So, I ran into then again in the pre-dawn hours at Wally World. They open the doors and I went running in. I managed to snag the very last Xbox. I'm looking around for other stuff when I realized that bitch had taken it out of my cart and put it in hers! So, I did a spinning roundhouse kick, shattering her femur, then I dropped her into an arm bar and said 'You're Done'. Everybody cheered.

Okay seriously, I just think they were just very rude people, in the sense of 'A rude cabin in the woods'. If it weren't for me, they would have been eating at a soup kitchen or gone without. It's possible that they had never been invited to dinner before. Oh well.

BTW they were the family of my roommate who is a decent Joe, but is a bit rough around the edges.

JackieLikesVariety 27th November 2015 01:08 PM

it was nice of you to invite them - good on ya.

SMG15 27th November 2015 04:43 PM

I'm thankful for a stable job and apt in a safe neighborhood

Don't you know it's fashionable to be late? I can't remember any family T-Day or Christmas gathering where everyone arrived "on-time," whatever that is. We would say, "Come by anytime after noon; we'll sit around, watch TV, play chess, baste the turkey, talk about family stuff, and eat at 4PM. If the turkey's done." Which means the cook(s) planned to serve at 5, but we usually ate at 6.

Sometimes people didn't make it in time. No problem -- do you really think we were short of leftovers and minded latecomers?
