Yeah, I think that went a step too far. I do appreciate Morgenstern calling Chimera out for fighting tooth and nail against us during this whole kerfuffle and then being all "we did it!" when the new rule was made, as well as his "enlightened male" stance he's now got going in Sunny's thread, and I don't like the guy either but let's keep some boundaries here, hm?

WHYYY does everyone keep feeding octopus?? I put him on ignore and scrolling by his countless posts has been bliss, except that so many of you fall for his trolling and quote him. If you really want him to go away, don't do that!

I'm sure most are poking at him to get their jollies, and/or hoping to provoke him into a raegflounce or somehow getting himself banned.

I agree responding to octopus is a waste of time. I've been reading the Pit thread and just scrolling past his posts. Whether he's trolling or sincere, or both, he's not willing to listen to reason so it's pointless and it takes over the thread.

I don't think MrDibble is black, just South African. I am not familiar enough with the pejorative bwana to know if that changes anything.

Mr. Dibble is mixed race IIRC, which I believe is (was?) a separate racial classification in the South African scheme. I think the term they use is "colored" which has a different connotation there than it does in the US.

It's a seperate ethnic identity, Capital C "Coloured". Not just mixed race, the mixed race people descended from the mix of Khoisan, Dutch/Europeans, Malays, etc. from the Dutch period, pre-English rule.

It's not merely being mixed, it's that ancestry / descendance. Every one I ever met was very particular about it.

He wasn't using it as a pejorative. Instead he was telling Mr. Dibble to use that term to address him. It means "(in East Africa) a boss or master" ... according to Google's dictionary anyway.

I appreciate the info on racial demographics in South Africa. I was familiar somewhat with the white/colored/black divide from Trevor Noah's "Born A Crime" but I appreciate further details.

The sense is that he, Octopus the white American is the Boss/Master of the darkie (Dibble). It's pretty damn pejorative to Dibble.

I don't think there are any jollies to be had. He's a twit, below "troll" and "tard" in the message board taxonomy. His raison d'être is to be a constant low-level irritant—a pebble in the SDMB shoe—and it's one of the only things he's good at. His shtick is too feeble to ever get him banned, so I also wish people would stop fuckin' replying to him so he'd stay plonked.

He's said he's what they (SA govt.) used to classify as "Colored". It's anyone not classified as "White" or "Black", IOW, second class, rather than third (black). So, no, it doesn't change anything.

It was an insult when I used it for him the first time(it's sarcastic, so basically the opposite of respectful) so him adopting it as some sort of slur on my is hi-fucking-larious, actually.
