Kanopy.com

My local library shared this link. If you have a library card, it's supposed to be free. I haven't tried it yet.

The fine print near the bottom specifies participating libraries, so yours has to be a member. I haven't tried mine yet, too busy. I'll try it this evening.

Mr. Plumbean 19th December 2018 06:41 AM

Cool idea. Unfortch, Hennepin County isn't on board yet.

Helena 19th December 2018 09:07 AM

Mine worked! They have some nice films including Lady Bird. Thank you for the link!

Mr. Plumbean 19th December 2018 09:15 AM

I really liked Lady Bird. Interested in seeing her Mary Queen of Scots.

Contact your library, see if they can get it?

stormie 19th December 2018 02:00 PM

I love it. My library is hooked up with Overdrive and Hoopla; Kanopy is a whole nother set of free stuff.

Helena 9th January 2019 03:40 PM

Inna, I have to thank you again. I'm a very non-traditional college student, and in one of my classes, we have to review a specified documentary every. freaking.week. The professor has tried to find free or close-to-free sites for all the documentaries. This week, the best she could do was youtube for $1.99. That's not much, but it wasn't good enough for me, so I Googled the title. Up pops kanopy with it for FREE. So I told her about the site, public library card, etc., and she was SO excited. She was really happy with the quality of all the documentaries and that they were free.

So thanks for getting me some brownie points! :D

Inna Minnit 9th January 2019 03:49 PM

Excellent!

C2H5OH 10th January 2019 03:05 PM

Does their website have a list of 'participating libraries'? I've been a bit busy to look, lately...

Mr. Plumbean 10th January 2019 04:02 PM

Yes.

Dragonlady 10th January 2019 04:16 PM

Im not included. :(

JackieLikesVariety 10th January 2019 04:43 PM

nor me. sigh.

AuntiePam 10th February 2019 02:10 PM

Thanks for posting this, and for mentioning it in that other thread as well.

My library is on the list so I signed up. I don't particularly like watching movies on the PC but I can sit for 15-20 minutes at a time. I think.

Helena 10th February 2019 03:38 PM

AuntiePam, they have an app if you have a compatible device.

I have a Fire -- would that be compatible?

Anyway, I got an email from them already, asking me to double-check the way I listed my library. I did, and it's the same as what was on their list, so I'm not sure what's going on.

What Exit? 11th February 2019 02:54 AM

I'm going to call my Library today, mine in on the list but Kanopy doesn't seem to like my card number.

Inna Minnit 19th September 2019 10:47 AM

They have upgraded their offerings. The Children's section has unlimited viewing, and there is some good stuff there.

They are also giving you unlimited access to The Grest Courses.

What kind of courses are offered from Great Courses? Anything good for career training?

there are so many free classes online (for career training and otherwise) we should have a thread just for that.

maybe we already do?

If we do, it's probably really outdated. Why don't you start a new one? I'll post my Coursera story. :)

Dragonlady 19th September 2019 04:47 PM

Still denied.
In my little town and the bigger one 20 miles away. :(

Maybe call your library and ask for the cool stuff.

stormie 22nd January 2020 01:42 PM

JackieLikesVariety 1st March 2020 08:29 PM

my library's newsletter just announced we now have kanopy! whooHOO! :science:

Helena 20th March 2020 11:02 PM

If you're already signed up you probably got this in your email, but Kanopy now has a selection of movies that don't count towards your monthly limit.

JackieLikesVariety 21st March 2020 06:49 AM

thanks for reminding me of this option.

Inna Minnit 3rd April 2020 09:09 AM

Bumping this to remind y'all to check your library's online options. My local library has a ton of online stuff. I was just poking around at the website, they have all kinds of data bases, classes, ebooks. Get your library card out and check out what is available to you.

Inna Minnit 9th March 2021 10:28 AM

Bumping this to remind you to check your local library website. My library added FREE access to Acorn TV. All the *BBC yumminess you crave.

<koff koff> "BBC" means something very different to enthusiasts of ... certain mature video genres. :pervert:

And when beer/ale enthusiasts such as myself are in Western Massachusetts it means "Berkshire Brewing Company," but that's not important right now.

BeeGee 10th March 2021 10:17 AM

I just signed up with Kanopy through UT. It says for students or faculty, but they went by my domain. (@utexas.edu) Here's the thing: UT offers all staff, retirees, and alumni a free @utexas.edu email address just for asking. SO if your library isn't on the list, you might check and see if your alma mater is and if they offer a similar email setup.

I signed up online and they mailed the physical card to me a few days later. But I got everything I need for online Library stuff the next day.

Rebo 10th March 2021 11:18 AM

Cool! Thanks. I'll look into it.

JackieLikesVariety 14th May 2023 05:39 PM

I can now get kanopy through my library and I'm watching The Accidental Tourist right now! :toot:
