134: Yeah she's a Snark . . . . House. She's Durpy Durpay; just lettin' it all hang out.
GO!!

How many posts to complain in?
|
I think we've got a new leader in the Random and Capricious Admine Stakes...
|
Fixed the title - just lettin' IT all hang out.
Not a bad title, as snark titles go. |
Ow! She's mighty-mighty, just lettin' it all hang out... ♫ :cluck:
|
I actually LIKE the title. You've got a long way to go to beat Fenris.

Was someone besides me watching the Time-Life Midnight Special infomercial last night? :D

Just_Asking_Questions, who huffily flounced the day after the Discourse migration, has returned.
What motivated him to de-flounce? The derpiest thing imaginable: an opportunity to complain about the Star Wars prequels. |

*But of course he didn't *really* respond to me, because I was talking about the trilogy as a whole, not individual films: you don't have to be an Abrams fanboy to think the three movies together just don't work. In fact, I'm not sure how it follows at all that thinking the trilogy as a whole is a "hot mess" makes one an Abrams fanboy since he directed the first and last installments. Doesn't follow at all... |
Another candidate for the "WVa's dumbest lawyer" thread, where the pot calls the kettle black, but I haven't gotten around to restoring my sock at the Durp to post it. Andyone else want to do the honors, just so it appears under his post?

I'm getting a junior mod vibe from BigT in this thread Cartooniverse started about how ... using the term "ricer car" is akin to a KKK rally.

http://i2.wp.com/dcisgoingtohell.com...IGTHGRAV22.jpg At this point, I think the anti-avatar/graphics/feature crowd holds onto their technological luddism because it gives them Internet old-timer I-don't-own-a-TV-style intellectual cred. "We didn't need avatars to know who was who on The Wizard's Sleeve BBS or alt.fan.monty-python back in the day, and I can't imagine why we would need them today!" |
Hey!

Andy! Gotten any sleep lately? :D

When I replaced vBulletin on my site, there was a huge burst in posting activity, but after a month or so things settled down to about 80-120 posts/day, or 150% of pre-conversion activity. It was still nowhere near the mid-2000s average of about 300 posts/day, but I'm happy with the results. (The forum's main topic is a niche profession, whose practitioners have long embraced mailing lists as a part of its culture. "Are you on the Northwest South Dakota travel demand modeling listserv?") I wonder how other general interest message boards fared after they moved away from vBulletin. The signups: how many are legit users, and how many are spammers? On the old Dope, whenever I clicked on a new user profile, and manually worked my way back, it seemed like 95% of everybody that recently registered was a spammer. Lots of usernames and profile information that just seemed "spammy" or obviously from India, lots of spam in profiles. What strikes me is that a huge message board like the SDMB gets about 15-20 new users per day, the same as my lowly site used to get 15 years ago. And those were mostly legit users, too. |
I think the graph shows that the trend is still downward. There was an upward spike due to people complaining or trying to find ways to use the new format, but I think once things settle down it will continue its slow decay.
Maybe less slow than if they'd stuck with vB. But I don't think anyone is going to join up. |

I'm surprised by how comfortable it feels to not post anything on the Dope. It could be habit-forming.

Sometimes he goes beyond the usual junior-mod or mod-wannabe thing, and sounds like he's typing from a parallel universe where he really is a moderator. |

I don't begrudge anyone the ability to goof off at work. Before I retired, I read the Dope at work plenty of times. But I would be embarrassed to demand, publicly, that a message board with thousands of members be configured to meet my goofing-off needs. |
You know, I actually kinda like Left Hand of Dorkness as a poster, and I think the dope would be worse off without him (I know I said I'd only miss you, Vinyl. Sorry, I lied.) But man, he spends a lot of time talking about how he shuts up and listens.

Title doesn't suck.

I tried to access the Dope at work last night. Discourse basically told me: "Your browsers too old grandpa!" |

Liberal (or was he Libertarian then?) posted, in massive red letters: Stop stealing from your employer. It cracked me up at the time. The post is here, but the transition to Discourse didn't preserve the font size or color. |
Awww, that means Duck Duck Goose calling jarbabyj a cunt in giant type won't be preserved, either :( I always liked when someone fired back at the bitch brigade.

I didn't know about this incident, so I went searching and managed to find the thread. Wow, what a train wreck that was! Followed up by Duck Duck Goose starting another one when the first was closed. |
