MONSTER MASH MEGAPOLL: NOMINATION THREAD

Given my forgetfulness and indolence, this thing's liable to still be running come Halloween so at least it's an appropriate theme, right? :innocent:

So, uh, let's nominate some monsters!

I'm not even going to ATTEMPT to limit the number of nominations because that's a recipe for cluster headaches. For purposes of this megapoll, I'm defining a monster as an inhuman creature who does not have control over their inhumanity, who were altered against their will. This rules out Scooby-Doo type guys in a monster suit or people who can voluntarily turn into a critter. Intelligence or lack thereof won't be a limiting factor, and neither will be good/evil.

Included:

Monsters mythological and Biblical (like the ones that NAF made such a stink about in the villains polls because they were more monstery than villainous). Collections of monsters (i.e. The Stymphalian Birds) are allowed.

Monsters cinematical, cartoonish, buffoonish, and video game-ical, be they muppets, puppets, kaiju (giant Japanese monsters, i.e. Godzilla), animated, or whatever. Yes, I'm including the muppets. Some of them have Monster right in their freaking names, people! :cookiemonster:

Monsters cryptozoological (Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, etc.) So they don't exist... neither do any fictional creatures, and they're part of the zeitgeist.

NOT included: humans who are evil or demented, but who are still fully human. They may do monstrous things, but that makes them evil humans, not monsters.

Humans who were VOLUNTARILY altered by themselves or someone else, even if things went to hell afterwards.

Humans who were altered by accident will be decided on a case-by-case basis, as this runs the gamut from people like Spider-Man who embraced the change and use it for good, to Two-Face, who kind of didn't.

I'm ruling out mutants because they've been well-covered in the hero and villain polls and extreme cases can be sorted by the other rules.

Other cases will be decided capriciously and randomly.

Megapoll runners. Those monsters are just the worst and are guaranteed the top spot ;)

So don't hesitate; nominate!

@Rebo or someone, would you please sticky this for me?

JackieLikesVariety 19th July 2020 07:32 AM

"Voluntary" doesn't count. He was seduced by power and corrupted, but that ring didn't just jump off the end table and plant itself on his finger now, did it?

Dracula is pretty close to the same category. The Witch King did not know what he was in for but I accept him as disqualified. Drac was a very learned man that studied alchemy and then the dark arts. He's wasn't just a monster, he most likely made himself said.

Zeener Diode 19th July 2020 09:11 AM

YAY RATTY HAZ A POLL :confetti:

Did W/E forget to include Sauron? :rigs:

I'm siding with the Wraith Riders as bonafide monsters.

So, would this include Michael Moebius?

silenus 19th July 2020 09:13 AM

The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
Abyssal Chicken
Alhoon
etc., etc. You should probably DQ almost everything from D & D, otherwise we'll have people digging out old Monster Manuals and posting wholesale lists that include things only Frank could love.

Sauron is a Fallen Maia (Angel) not a monster. The Balrog is even a little iffy, but seems to have always been a spirit of fire, destruction and hate.

Zeener Diode 19th July 2020 09:15 AM

Shadowman
Slender Man
Candy Man
Chucky
(The creature from) Jeepers Creepers
(The creature from) It Follows
and of course, Pennywise from It

I'm willing to have both of them DQ'd based on "uncertainty of origin."

The ones I listed above D&D borrowed, I was going with the monsters of legends. I tried to get specific in fact in many cases.

Speaking of which, The Lernaean Hydra the Hercules killed is a good one.

The Gorn was a Starship Captain, no monster. You're being speciest. :)

Sounds like Morbius doesn't really count. I assume Mr. Hyde is out.

To me, and I have studied these matters deeply*. Sauron is a fallen angel or lesser god not a monster. The Balrog is similar but seems to be more of a monster or demon in its makeup. It is up to the Monster herself to decide though. Our poll master Rat Diva.

I think if we accept Dracula, we should absolutely accept The Witch King.

* I know, sad isn't it?

Sauron is a villain. Free will and all that. A monster is not evil. I just does monster things, e.g. eat children, not due to an agenda to take over the world, but only because they're yummy and tender. Nom-nom.
Kraken, Godzilla and The Creature [from the Black Lagoon] are monsters,
Dracula, Mr Hyde and Joker are villains.

Ratty @Rat Diva May I suggest a ban on cartoon/comics monsters. Cartoons draw quite a lot of animosity in polls and they tend to clutter up the roster only to be voted of. Only nit-wits Silenus and Naf vote for cartoon cars, villains. I think they OD'd on Sat morning cartoons in the 80's

Karma 19th July 2020 10:35 AM

R.O.U.S.es! (I don't think they exist. ;))

3acres 19th July 2020 10:43 AM

Gonna say no, the key being NORMAL in their world.

I'm also going to ix-nay anthropomorphic creatures that act as human equivalents in their own worlds. Meaning something along the lines of Zootopia where it's a world of critters.

Hey, I'M one of those nitwits who ODed on cartoons back in the 80s!

Therefore, I have no choice but to make this guy the mascot for this megapoll :harumph:

That's me: hung over!

But you wouldn't vote for a Scooby-Doo or Transformers monster over Godzilla, would you? Would you? Please don't kabong me...

Rat Diva 19th July 2020 11:39 AM

No on Scooby because he's treated as a normal dog in universe... as far as talking dogs go...

I have to figure out what I'm going to do about robots.

Borborygmi 19th July 2020 11:41 AM

Yay, Ratty back on the megapoll scene in big way! I nominate...

Rhindle (of course)
Jabberwocky
The Killer Tomatoes
Audrey II
The Cavity Creeps

silenus 19th July 2020 11:41 AM

The Serial Ape-ist (BBT)
Moloch (BtVS)
Sweet (BtVS)
The First Evil (BtVS)
Gachnar (BtVS)
The Gentlemen (BtVS)

Rat Diva 19th July 2020 11:52 AM

Ok, as far as robots/computers/technological doodads go:

They won't count if they were created to be killbots or similar, only if they are sentient.

The Gargantuas (voting could be problematic with the pair, since one is "evil" and the other one is "good")

Caltiki (would be a good match-up going against The Blob)

If they are sentient, doesn't that make them "villains" instead of "monsters?"
