I just ate an oatmeal-raisin cookie and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Oatmeal raisin is fine cookie,eat it in the morning and pretend it's a healthy breakfast. You know oats and fruit, that's nutrition!

Before I judge, raisins or sultanas? I know you mob often call sultanas raisins. Raisins in a (ahem) biscuit are wonderful, sultanas a bit ordinary.

I'm not a fan of raisins but they're OK in Irish Soda bread and Oatmeal Cookies.

A good Oatmeal Cookie is good enough.
I still like Fig Newtons, talk about oddball tastes. I get them only rarely, but tasty.

Yes, they're all raisins here. What you call sultanas are "golden raisins" around these parts. You won't find many currants in the U.S. for historical horticultural reasons. What is left out of this discussion thus far is the divine flavor of craisins, which are (usually sweetened) dried cranberries. Pop those in your oatmeal cookies, maybe with a little orange zest, and you've elevated it to a new level.

I think the best thing about an oatmeal raisin cookie is the way they tend to maintain their chewy, toothy texture. The best ones have a substantial bite to them.

I make a darn good oatmeal cookie. I add a bit of nutmeg and cardamom to the recipe and use an ice cream scoop to make them hugemongous. That way they get a nice ratio of golden brown delicious outside to chewy interior. Plus it's easier to to say "I'll just have ONE" when it's equivalent to four normal ones :cookiemonster:

Before I retired the oatmeal cookies I made at work had craisins, not raisins. Those cookies were popular.

The Craisin Oatmeal cookies are a nice treat.

I use dried cherries when I make oatmeal cookies. I'm definitely not anti-raisin, though.

I can't eat raisins or any of those other fruits. :mad:

We just finished eating four dozen of the finest homemade oatmeal raisin chocolate chip pecan cookies west of the Mississippi. I love raisins.

(It took us over a week!)

We can get cranberry stuff here now but not having it around as a kid makes it seem a little wrong. I think I have seen craisins but have never tried them.

My partner eats sultana bran most mornings. I have to say that I never quite got used to US supermarket shelves when I lived over there, everything just seemed a little bit off.

No blackcurrant, but we did have Hawaiian Punch, Sunny Delight, and other bottled fruit juice "blends" that were basically sugar water (later high fructose corn syrup water) with a smidgen of fruit pulp floating around in it. But they were "made with" fruit so they were healthy, honest!

We do have the confusingly named Zante Currant, which are not actually currants but eeny-weeny raisins made from eeny-weeny grapes.

I still adore blackcurrant flavour, when my stomach turns on me and I need a liquid diet for a few days it is blackcurrant/apple juice that makes it all ok.

I've had blackcurrant drinks and I like them, but here in the US they're marketed as more of a health food or adult flavor rather than as a kids' drink.

I remember in college, on our nature walks, once in a while you'd come across some land that used to be a farm or garden and if you were lucky there'd be currant or gooseberry bushes with fruit on them. Gooseberries have worse thorns than roses, but I'd deal with it :D

I've had blackcurrant flavored candies, I'm pretty sure they were imported. Confectioners in the U.S. tend to replace blackcurrant with black raspberry or blackberry flavor because they figure dumb Americans won't go for something they're not familiar with. The net result is the same color, but the flavor is different. Not as different as raisins are from craisins, but they're definitely not a direct substitute.

I spent a lot of time as a youth reading "classic children's literature" that skewed heavily English, which explains my exposure to things like currant buns and treacle.

Ahh yes, I blame my childhood* obesity on Enid Blyton, she made all the bad stuff seem so good.

Major pest in Central New York, too, half a world away from you. I don't eat the damn things anymore. Can't stand 'em. I'd take a flame-thrower to them, but I don't want to burn down my house or out-buildings. My whole yard is full of those sons-o-bitches.

From my dad's family we had a fruitcake recipe that came from a Buffalo, New York newspaper in the 1940's. It had raisins AND currants. I think I'm the only one in the family who still makes it. The only change I have made is that instead of the amonds the original recipes lists, I use pecans instead.

The recipe I have does call for citron, but one could leave it out I suppose, and use a little extra of the rest of the fruits.

I loved her a lot.

Once upon a time in a bathroom not far from here, I was sitting very quietly when a co-worker came in and went into the first stall. She did not check for feet and I was at the end of the row. She started singing. Celine Dion-style over-the-top, over-modulated "When I hooooollllddd yououew-ew-ew-oh-ooo in my arrrmmmssss". I was dying. I held my breath. I held my nose. Nearly blew out my eardrums trying sooooo hard not to laugh. All that suppression meant it had to go somewhere. And, as I described later to my boss, I pooted. Right in the middle of a pause in her concert. High, squeaky, drawn out, followed by the gentle "ploop" into the water of the toilet of a single little ball of poop. She scuttled out pretty fast, but it took me another ten minutes to get myself under control.

I will never, ever be a civilized mature lady, but I do enjoy a good laugh.
