Fast Food Mega-Poll nomination thread

Okay, so I took a little longer to put this up than I promised, because I had to work out the qualifications:

1) No fast casual*. The cutoff criteria for fast casual as opposed to fast food will be the routine use of reusable, washable plates/bowls/cups/eating utensils (only the ubiquitous fast food plastic serving trays are allowed) for "for-here" orders, as opposed to disposable ones. Exceptions: You may request an exception to this rule by explaining why your proposed store should be exempt even though it serves its food in a manner that flies in the face of sacred fast food doctrine. Exception must be granted before any of its menu items are nominated.

2) Discontinued items: When you nominate a discontinued item, label it discontinued and include the approximate year that it was dropped. Depending on how many discontinued items are nominated, I may include some or all of them in the main poll, run a concurrent mini-megapoll for them, or just quietly drop them like a discontinued fast food item.

3) No mom-and-pop shops. While they may have just as quick service as fast food, there's just a certain soulless institutional vibe that they lack to count as true fast food. Plus, you're probably going to be the only one who votes for your local take-out store and do you really want to see it be crushed like a bug in Round 1?

4) Wawa-style gas stations. We don't really have these around here, so I will allow them on the honor system of: if you really feel like that they have a fast-food-vibe, as opposed to having a deli-vibe or a cafeteria-vibe, put them in. If someone else nominates something from one of this type of store, and you don't think the store qualifies, call them out and we can have Megapoll Fighting[TM] right here in the nomination thread! Please label these as Rule 4 nominations to maximize the potential for altercations.

Please include the name of the item that you are nominating, the restaurant/store that it is from, and a brief description of the item if you feel it is appropriate (or just want to get a jump on providing voting propaganda). If discontinued, also follow Rule 2. If Wawa-ish, also follow Rule 4.

*Look, if it's a place that I've never been, you know I am not going to google it to find out if it uses real plates, but be prepared for your fellow Megapollers to call you out for being a dirty dirty cheat. If it doesn't come out until the middle of the Megapoll, it'll just auto-lose its current round.

Do you want it that specific? I figured anything from the single to the triple, with or without cheese could be an entry.

Kat 2nd February 2025 09:47 AM

Well, single/double/triple could probably be a single entry, but hamburger vs cheeseburger should probably be separate.

Qdoba’s black beans. I love the not-so-subtle lime taste. It’s kind of fast casual but the food is only served in disposable containers with plastic utensils. It should make the cut!

Popeye’s friiiiied apple pie.

Cane’s chicken fingers

Cane’s Texas toast

Burger King’s chicken fries

Sonic’s mozzarella sticks

Jaglavak 2nd February 2025 10:14 AM

Taco Bell burrito supreme with double meat and fire sauce.

No need to nominate anything else from Taco Bell because every single thing on their menu tastes exactly the same.

I'm going to channel my inner doper here and brag about how I almost never eat all this crap y'all are nominating. :smug:

and then nominate Burgerville's Crispy Halibut Sandwich, just for the halibut. :p

I don't often pay $9 for a fish sandwich but when I do, this is a good one.

I call foul. Pizza Hut is not fast food, even when it's made at a Taco Hutt/Pizza Bell location.

Let the fights begin!

I was going to nominate Burgerville's huckleberry shake, but I worried you, me, and Zeener would be the only votes for it. Everyone outside Oregon and southern WA would have to trust us that their food is amazing, and this group is not the trusting type.

Uh-uh-uh! As I mentioned when Ratty first brought up the fast food theme, drive-thrus don't make it fast food. Panera has drivethrus. So does Noodles.

good point. and for all I know the crap fish sandwich the Golden Arches serves might also cost $9. :fist:

Zeener Diode 2nd February 2025 12:12 PM

So the Wawas argument holds that food dispensed from a stand-alone heated compartment, where the food is already cooked and waiting to be sold, is not allowable except under certain circumstance? Fine.

So should I expect similar treatment of other gas station slash convenience stores slash snack bars? Say, like am/pm or Jackson's? These are closer to home (e.g., west coast) and offer specific fast food beyond hot dogs and nachos. (Even 7/11 has expanded to include gas and hot food.)

Also the time matters. Panera drive through doesn't take under 3 minutes. Pizza Hut does. Also it's served in the same cardboard and plastic as McDonald's uses. No real plates. And it's a different menu than other pizza huts. Taco bell pizza hut is a distinct entity.

OK, then Panera and Noodles is fast food. As in a food-like substance that you can get quickly, like it says right there in the name. There's nothing about fancy bread and panini sandwiches that makes it not fast or not food.

I've actually never used the drive-thru, but I have done eat-in, to-go and pick-up ordering via the app. It is not exactly that fast. Faster than, say, eating in at Denny's, but still not fast-food fast. I don't expect that adding a drive-up window makes prep any faster.

I see NAF has Popeye's Spicy Chicken listed. That would be my option for the Final Four.

Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich
KFC Spicy Chicken Sandwich
Dave's Hot Chicken Single Slider
Dave's Not Chicken Single Slider (made with cauliflower)

Also: 5 Guys Burgers are listed as "Little" (single) or otherwise two patties. I prefer the Little to the regular.

The Melts are different; the burgers have lettuce, tomato, onion.

That isn't what a Wawa is, it is more like a Deli Chain that is also a Gas Station and Convenience Store. The Food is prepared on the spot, mot pre-made.

"Fast food" is more than just the time it takes to serve you. The Lions Club might have a pancake breakfast where you walk up and get a plate of pancakes in 30 seconds, but it's not fast food. A soup kitchen isn't fast food. There are lots more similar examples.

Fast food must be fast, but not all food that's fast is fast food. Therefore, it can be used to exclude something, but it isn't useful to ensure inclusion.

I'm going back on my earlier objection: I want to nominate 7/11 Pepperoni Pizza. It's not an item you can order and pickup, nor is it a wienie on steaming greasy rollers. It's smaller than a pan pizza and has four slices per pie. They're premade and kept under heat lamps, and you might get a slice that's tough to chew, but it satisfies your pepperoni craving without going to Pizza Hut, and it's cheap. Also: the breakfast pizzas are similar to Red Baron singles, and surprisingly tasty.

7/11 Pepperoni Pizza
7/11 Personal Breakfast Pizzas

This is a good description. I tell people that Wawa is like Subway but with a 7/11 attached. Only the best imaginable version of either. Sheetz I only go to for the coffee honestly. There aren't many close by, but it's got more variety of food, but it's all made fresh.

Diamonds02 3rd February 2025 03:54 AM

Whenever I see “Wawa”, I think about toddlers. “I want to drink wawa, mama!” Whenever I see “Sheetz” I think about old country folks. “Oh shiiiiiieeeet!”

And “Kum N Go” Well……. :wanker:
