It bothers me far less that the durp has arbitrary rules - so do many other messageboards, especially those built around a single persona - than the refusal of the mods/admins to admit that the rules are arbitrary.

Does Dex really believe that the mods and admins still have the respect of, or credibility with, the majority of the durp membership. If so, I want some of whatever drugs he's taking.

I think it's been less than a year since the SDMB was my first Internet stop every day, a friendly place where you could find intelligent people talking about all sorts of interesting things. Was I just oblivious then, or did things go to shit really suddenly?

You must have been oblivious. The things people are complaining about now are pretty much the same things they were complaining about at the beginning of this decade. The major change is that the mods and admins no longer make any pretense of caring about the wishes of the membership.

Dex is always going on about trying to build a sense of "community" - someone needed to give him a reality check about how current moderation and administration strategies directly conflict with that goal.

If the person who got the PM doesn't want it to go any further than that, I'd say it's just polite to respect his wishes. Especially, as Gfactor pointed out, they didn't really HAVE a rule regarding threats in PMs--but it looks like there is now, since he kinda laid it down in the thread. Gfactor is actually doing the right thing, not warning someone for something that probably OUGHT to be in the rules until it actually IS in the rules. Sometimes those initial test cases have less than ideal resolutions, which is what spurs new laws to prevent the same or similar thing from happening again.

That said, that briwhoever guy is a serious douchebag with some fairly serious unresolved anger issues. Yuck. "Gut you?" That's just naaaasty... :eek:

ETA: Also, note that Gfactor doesn't really GIVE warnings for cunt and fuckyou violations--he just says "this is against the rules, don't do it again, no warning issued." Gfactor's a cool guy... ;)

The bullshit about holding Giraffe to a higher standard because he's a former mod is patently ridiculous, even by their increasingly bizarre after-the-fact rationalizations. Their behavior is increasingly spiteful against anyone who dares--gasp!--post anyplace where they can't control what's said about the SDMB.

The Raffe board, snackpit, mellophant, etc. aren't enemies. They're symptoms of the Dope's fundamental dysfunction. They exist because the SDMB became stupidly resistant even to listening to their supposedly valued 'community'.

Which is one of the reasons why the original snark communities became anonymous. Who'd have thought that years later posters would still have to consider the possible repercussions of criticising the durp elsewhere?

But oh, so glad you did those last ones.
