So ... Punk

You feeling lucky, Punk?

SmartAleq 11th December 2009 03:57 PM

You're gonna put a yes/no poll in here, aren't ya? Well, I vote "purple!" :D

HongKongFooey 11th December 2009 04:01 PM

Tough choice. The Clash it is though.

The Futility of Nihilism 11th December 2009 04:07 PM

Random youtubing brought me into the Land of Punk so I thought, what the hell, I'd start a poll.

I gotta be honest, I've never really been a fan of the Ramones. Just can't get into them. I like the Clash well enough, but shit man: Sex Pistols.

HongKongFooey 11th December 2009 04:10 PM

Sex Pistols had the raw energy, the Clash had underrated skillz. I think their drummer was great.

Actually I'd rather listen to the Dead Kennedys or Bad Religion than any of the choices.

Taur 11th December 2009 04:45 PM

Awwww, FoN. This is almost... mean, man.

The Ramones were the first punk rock band and certainly had the longest career. The Sex Pistols' sound (well, it wasn't music) was the epitome of punk--anarchic, raw, and fugly. Then the Clash went to school and pwned their jedi masters. They took the more tender center of rawest punk, seasoned it with some ska, reggae, and a bit of funk, and served us up a fine meal of juicy grooves with more prime-cut lyrics to chew on.

All of these bands have garnered significant accolades and their place in music history, but if we're going to hold bands to the first tenet of punk, all of them failed when they made their first buck off a gig. If you're going to the bother of being beholden to your enemy, then you might as well be a success.

So, the Claaaaash.

WednesdayAddams 11th December 2009 04:52 PM

London Calling, baby.

Giraffe 11th December 2009 04:54 PM

Mod note:

Moving poll to Y2C.

Darmund 11th December 2009 05:30 PM

X! That's who the fuck I'm talking about!

leafrog 11th December 2009 05:35 PM

Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Butthole Surfers, X. Lots of local bands.

Funny, I love the Clash, but I've never associated them with punk (though I know they are).

Darmund 11th December 2009 05:36 PM

I wouldn't call Butthole Surfers punk. Don't know what I would call them, but not that...

Pansy 11th December 2009 06:11 PM

Dead Kennedys. :poke:

bufftabby 11th December 2009 06:19 PM

Misfits, motherfucker.

gnome42 11th December 2009 06:43 PM

All the above
Throw in some Dead Kennedys, Descendants, Bad Brains, Bad Religion, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, D.I., D.O.A., Fear, Germs, L7, Minor Threat, Operation Ivy, Misfits.
All a bit different from each other, all a hell of a lot of fun.

Gnome

Khampelf 11th December 2009 06:48 PM

Tough Call.

Went with the Clash, though I love the Ramones, and the Sex Pistols are the iconic punk band. Gotta go with what HKF said, Pistols had the energy, but the Clash had the skillz. The Ramones run the middle ground.

The Dead Kennedys are the punk band I was most into when I was a punk rocker, myself.

FUCK YEAH!

Uthrecht 11th December 2009 08:24 PM

What, no love for the Voidoids?

I think it's highly subjective; do you want anger over everything? Are you going more with the stripped-down sound as paramount, or do you want it over-the-top? I think each of the three bands given interprets it their own way.

Voidoids? Might as well ask about Ultra Vivid Scene, or Skinny Puppy.

Salambo 11th December 2009 09:08 PM

The Clash, all the way. My Dad raised me on them from before I could talk, and they've stood the test of time. The older I got, the better they became to me. Joe was one of my heroes, and I'd always hoped I'd one day get to meet him. And fuck 2002, while I'm at it. What an awful year that was.

All fine bands mentioned here, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, all great. I'm still a fan of the funner little bands like NOFX and the Vandals.

When you first hear lines sung as smoothly and smarmily as:

I'm well aware that you are chemically imbalanced
but I'm the kind of guy that
likes a challenge

...you know you're going to have a fun ride. :D

Zombies! 11th December 2009 10:45 PM

The fucking Sex Pistols you bollocks!

I am an anti-Christ
I am an anarchist

Khampelf 11th December 2009 10:49 PM

Did someone say 'The Vandals'?

Anarchy burger! Hold the government!

Smithish 11th December 2009 11:16 PM

I'm voting Iggy Pop and the Ramones because I'm from Michigan! They were playing in the local bars when I was in High School. Good thing I had a fake ID...

Hell yes, The Clash are the only band that matters. I have the London Calling cover for a tattoo.

Iggy and the Stooges run a close second though, but I used to live in MI so I'm kinda biased.

Smithish were you at the Detroit Stooges reunion show? If so you may have seen me there.

Maybe you could post a pic? It'd be a whole lot cooler if you did.

Revs 13th December 2009 09:52 PM

I don't have a camera handy at the moment, I'll post one tomorrow.

But here is something for all you Iggy fans

Muskrat Love 14th December 2009 07:58 AM

The Misfits.

Uthrecht 14th December 2009 08:01 AM

I'm going to change my answer to the Buzzcocks, soley for the reason that I started a Pandora channel of them, and got the following bands as well: The English Beat, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Iggy & The Stooges, The Jam, The Clash, Pixies, Dramarama, and The Damned.

Beats me what's next.

No, I moved to AZ in 1981. I would have said I saw Iggy in Lansing with Patti Smith but upon reflection that doesn't seem right... Back when I had a life I went to a LOT of shows, but at some point they all started to blur together...

RedRosesForMe 14th December 2009 11:39 AM

Uh, Stiff Little Fingers, duh. And no love for the Vibrators or the UK Subs? WTF?

Actually I'm down with most of the bands mentioned, and I voted for the Clash.

sancho panza 14th December 2009 11:50 AM

I have seen most of the uk bands in my time no mention of The Stranglers yet? brilliant in their day.

Red Roses I saw Peter and the Test Tube babys about a year ago in Sheffield

Doyle 14th December 2009 12:40 PM

The Ramones ARE punk!

Yeah I've seen PTTB twice now, always a fun time. Actually I think SLF is the only band in my previous post I haven't seen. :sciencefail:

ETA: Actually, no, I haven't seen the Gonads or the Vibrators.

rhythmonly 14th December 2009 01:20 PM

I've always found the Dickie's cover of Knights in White Satin to be most efficacious.

Revs 14th December 2009 06:48 PM

As promised last night, my London Calling tat.

You may have, Patti Smith did marry Fred Sonic Smith from the MC5 so there was a good chance that her and Iggy would have been in MI at the same time.

And thank you Wednesday.

Xploder 14th December 2009 09:12 PM

Millions Of Dead Cops. I used to be into a lot of really off the wall punk.

Revs 14th December 2009 09:16 PM

Oh, you mean MDC. Yeah, those guys rock. Have you seen the "Live At San Quentin " concert video? It's all kinds of awesome.

Xploder 14th December 2009 09:34 PM

Nope. I only even really remember them because I have an ancient vinyl album called Let Them Eat Jellybeans which has a LOT of esoteric punkers on it. Weird songs like Isotope Soap and whatnot. I do, however, have the complete discographies of Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Devo, Oingo Boingo, Sex Pistols, Suicidal Tendencies, AND both the movie and soundtrack of Repo Man.

Revs 14th December 2009 09:39 PM

That sounds like a great fucking collection.

Having the entire Sex Pistols discography isn't much of an accomplishment though.

Xploder 14th December 2009 09:57 PM

Yeah well...:sciencefail: Still though, there ARE 12 really cool cd's.

Oh yeah, Rock & Roll Swindle and Pirates Of Destiny are great. But do you have any of the Sid Vicious solo albums?

bufftabby 14th December 2009 10:13 PM

fuck that, who saw johnny rotten on judge judy? that's real fucking punk cred.

Revs 14th December 2009 10:15 PM

I'll see your Judge Judy and raise you a Marky Ramone and Jerry Only being interviewed on The People's Court.
