Season premiere of Chuck

A two-hour episode of Chuck airs tonight on NBC (finally!) then it moves to its regular Monday night slot tomorrow.

Chuck has a new Intersect in his head which turns him into a Superspy; I hope the change doesn't ruin the show.

Uthrecht 10th January 2010 06:22 AM

Well, this change of him getting to be a superspy actually prompted me to start looking into the show. I just watched the pilot last night on Hulu. The overall concept of him being a sad sack had left me uninterested in it.

Unfortunately, I don't see anywhere to find the remainder of the first season.

Rock 10th January 2010 06:30 AM

Some full episodes here, including several from Season 1.

Uthrecht 10th January 2010 06:36 AM

That brings up an interesting point: how much plot development happens over the course of the show thus far (you don't have to give reveals). That is, can you pretty much watch any old episode in any order and be fine, or do they have changes, reveals, developments that mean I shouldn't skip shows?

(sorry if I'm diverging from your OP)

Rock 10th January 2010 06:44 AM

There are story arcs, developments, recurring characters, etc. so it would definitely be better if you could watch all of the episodes in order, but if you can only watch a few episodes from each season (like on the IMDb link I posted) you'll get the gist of it.

Do you have a Netflix membership? That would be a good way to get caught up without investing in the DVD sets.

YAAAAAAY!!! Moar Chuck! I am also a bit concerned that his expert spyishness will alienate part of his base; some of the Charm of Chuck came from his being just a regular guy who wanted a normal life. OTOH, there was really no place else for the show to go, and keeping it the way it was could only last for so long.

Uthrecht, there are full episodes from season 1 at the WB.

I agree that the show could have gotten stale if they had continued with the "inept Chuck" routine for too long. I mean, he should have been learning something just from being around Sarah and Casey so much, even without the new Intersect.

Geobabe 10th January 2010 07:51 AM

Alan Sepinwall, who has seen the first five episodes of the new season, is still on the bandwagon, so I think the new direction is gonna be good. And for those who haven't been watching the show before this, here are his reasons why you should.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOAR CHUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just wanted to say that Chuck is quite the hero, in his own special way, but most importantly, it's very much an ensemble show. The side characters get really well developed over time and even though there are some filler episodes which are basically spy of the week, with Chuck frantically trying tom keep things secret. What happens to his family, friends, co-workers and co-spies is really good, because we viewers care about them.

Absolutely. That's another thing I hope they don't change. I like the gang at Buy More and I hope Chuck keeps his job there.

WednesdayAddams 10th January 2010 10:19 AM

I'm thinking that's likely from the previews. Watching Chuck drop Lester with one kick was a thing of beauty....

Rock 10th January 2010 10:44 AM

:smack: Oh yeah, I've seen that commercial! That was funny!

I hope we get to see Jeffster perform again.

Indeed. I was very pleased to see her in a bikini and underwear (totally serious there, I dig her). She's a fine actress, too, a great complement to Zac Levi, though I think they need to either get Chuck and Sarah together or give up on the unresolved sexual tension, because I have NO patience for that.

I can't believe they actually killed off Emmett! He was a shit, but OMG.

Did he actually say "pussy" on American tv?

Yeah, that was a shock!

I heard that too!

LordVor 11th January 2010 10:00 PM

Well, other than all the "Remember all that character development we resolved at the end of last season? Well, that was before we got renewed. Forget it ever happened, we're rebooting" that went on, I enjoyed the two hour premier alot. Of course, I may have been distracted by Sarah's ass in that bikini (yes, I'm in favor of white wet bikinis in HD).

I'm glad that Anna was the only one that got jetisonned (there were talks of having fewer supporting cast members), although it looks like they set up an excuse for Awesome and the sister to not be shown as much. I don't like the looks of the "with Adam Baldwin" in the opening credits, either...the one main problem that I saw with making Chuck the Super-Spy was that Casey really wouldn't be needed.

I'm still wary.

Uthrecht 12th January 2010 05:46 AM

I thought they had "with Adam Baldwin" on the first season episode I just watched. Mind you, I've just watched the one as yet. Perhaps they shifted it and are changing back?

Rock 12th January 2010 06:14 AM

It looks like they're going to keep the "Inept Chuck" routine going for a while, since his Superspy powers aren't engaged full-time. I liked last night's bit with Capt. Awesome helping out.

LordVor, did you catch what happened to Emmett?

So, does this more fully make Adam Baldwin into Robert Culp and Zachary Levi into William Katt?

I never noticed the similarities before! By the way, if you didn't know, Capt. Awesome is a nickname for Chuck's brother-in-law Devon.

Uthrecht 12th January 2010 06:43 AM

I think I'd picked up on the nickname sometime yesterday but I appreciate the tip, Bumbershoot. Thanks!

Yeah, and good riddance.

WednesdayAddams 12th January 2010 09:23 AM

Yeah, they needed a plot device to get Big Mike back in charge. Still...who do we have now to hate on that show?

Pencil 15th January 2010 12:42 AM

Did they really kill off

Awesome

WednesdayAddams 15th January 2010 05:49 AM

No. No, they did not.

The next ep is entitled Chuck vs. Operation Awesome, so I'm pretty sure they're going after him. Program description:

Quote:

Chuck must show Captain Awesome how to be a spy when he is targeted by an evil agent. Morgan's promotion to Assistant Manager changes his relationship with Jeff and Lester.

Easy on there, soldier.
