Well, that was interesting. More stuff to move today, this time at the storage locker, which is a concrete blockhouse in the middle of an acre of asphalt. Naturally I forgot to wear my gym shorts and sun hat, but at least I remembered the jug of water. Normally I like to keep a brisk but steady pace. So I worked up a decent head of steam and then paced myself, taking breaks every once in awhile and drinking plenty of water. But after a couple tons I noticed that I needed to rest more often and it really wasn't helping that much. I was drenched and tached out and feeling like my guts were in a medium oven. I recognized the leading edge of heat stroke, been there before. You can't tough it out with this shit. I decided to cut it short and go hit the shower.
But I did at least have to get things sorted enough to close the door. So I took an extra long break and drank a lot of water and then got back to work really slow. At this point I only had a little bit of lumber to load up, so I backed way off and took it one 2x4 at a time. But then I bent over to pick up another stick and ended up on my knees. Uh oh. I heaved to my feet and stumbled in to the back shady part of the locker. When my bare back hit the cool concrete I jumped so hard it set off a dandy leg cramp which worked it's way up into my lower back.
So I rolled around and made odd noises for a little while. It didn't get that bad and eased up pretty quick. After that I figured I would just lay there and watch the roof spin. I know how this goes, used to work in desert country, it felt like a mild case. I was still sweating alright, just needed a few minutes in the shade. Cheap thrills. Fifteen minutes later I tried to get up and ended up back on the floor. Almost heaved chow this time. OK then, middling case it is. I crawled over and got the water and then spent a couple hours snuggled up to that sweet icy floor. I felt better right away but I know how that goes too. Eventually the shade got to my side of the building and I staggered out and finished up. Six hours later my back is a bit sore but everything else works.
The fucked up part? It was only about 85 today. The redline used to be 100. I've been living in the great white north so long I've completely lost my chops. It's down to 66 now. I'm sitting here buck nekkid with all the windows open and it's finally comfortable.
