I admit this is the first time I've ever heard it. Although I consider myself well-read, it's just not a word that crops up in everyday conversation. It's understandable to me that so many people find it obscure.

Never read The Lord of the Rings? Saruman calls Theoden "Dotard!" in "The Voice of Saruman", when he's thoroughly losing it and Theoden has just said "We will have peace when you are hanged on a gibbet for the sport of your own crows".

Aragorn also uses the word "niggard" later on. That's Tolkien's background in Anglo-Saxon showing through.

Never read Lord of the Rings. Just never got into it. The closest I've come is Ramble On by Led Zeppelin. I get the Tolkien references in that one.
