Here's a video podcast I subscribe to where a pilot explains why that is what it is. It all comes down to a) it won't do any good because you can't get the people far enough away from each other, and b) would rapidly bankrupt any airline that tried to get them far enough apart. It's even a financially iffy proposition to even just not sell the middle seats. Essentially, you have two choices. Take the risk or don't fly. There won't and can't be any 'safe' air travel, and economic reality is to blame.
