Absolutely ultraviolet. UV energy is good at breaking molecules, including molecules that make up viruses and whatnot. Which is why certain orange idiots think shining UV in our orifices will save us from the 'rona. (it actually makes sense in an air purifier)
Electrostatic air filters are washable. Instead of relying on just being porous, they use their charge to attract and capture particulates/contaminants. Then you can wash them away. I don't know about portable units that have them; my folks had an electrostatic filter unit on their furnace at their last house.
Weekend update: I spent 20hrs in a weekend class on sustainability. It wasn't bad. The nice thing about online classes is I participated in the afternoon sessions from the porch yesterday (it's cool and rainy today) and had time to cook my family brunch during my lunch break today, and was home to cook dinner after class yesterday and today. The bad thing is I had to spend my lunch break cooking and cleaning up after brunch and now I need to pick up MD from her retreat and cook dinner and buy the week's groceries. The less said about what the rest of my household's been up to while I've been chained to my laptop, the better.
Also nice thing about online classes: I got sooooo much knitting done.
