As the saying goes, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." The Democrats have controlled NYS since 2019, and while the Senate was Republican-lead from 2011 - 2018, it was still a pretty cozy situation. (The Assembly has been Democratically controlled for at least the last 30 years.) Give the Democrats their due in NYS, they don't eat their own. They may fight, quibble, threaten and posture, but at the end of the day, they won't throw their own under the bus.
Prior to today, if I were a betting man (I'm not), and if I knew a fair amount Albany politics (one can't live within 25 minutes of the capital for the last 22 years and not be inundated by NYS political news), I would have guessed the Assembly would slow roll the impeachment process, and IF they had voted to impeach, the Senate would have slow rolled the removal process until after the election hoping he wouldn't run or, more unlikely, wouldn't get re-elected.
If you go by
this ranking, NY is the 6th most corrupt state, and I believe it. Both the former Senate leader leader (Joe Bruno - R) and longtime Assembly leader (Sheldon Silver - D) were charged with various crimes spanning years. Bruno was eventually acquitted, but Silver is still in jail.
This is not a statement on Democrats or Republicans, I hate both parties, and have been a proud unaffiliated voter for almost 30 years. In fact, it's interesting that, if you look at the above list, the most corrupt states (first 10, from the top) are R, D, R, R, R, D, R, R, R, R, one could argue the R's are more corrupt than the D's, but I'm not sure it's that easy. I think a more accurate explanation is the party in charge makes the rules.
Back to Cuomo, as I said, I would have guessed prior to this weekend and today, he would have survived somewhat intact, i.e., not forced from office, no charges ever filed and allowed to sail off into retirement, but I'm not so sure. His political mannerism are very heavy-handed, he's a political animal, and after awhile, even the Emperor develops enemies within his party, so he's on thin ice, IMHO.
The potentially criminal sexual assault and harrassment charges are horrible, but I am thoroughly disgusted by the nursing home debacle, and he may very well get away with murder, OK, negligent homicide. (IANAL, sorry.) How we allow our political leaders, regardless of political affiliation, to behave the way they do is the greatest mystery to me today. This should be something ALL citizens of ALL political affiliations and beliefs could get behind - hold our political leaders responsible for their actions regardless of party. Corruption is corruption, and both parties are guilty.
