Poking my head in to wish everyone a good 2023, or as good as can reasonably be expected. Sending you all vibes for peace in all circumstances!
Our holiday was good and my break was long. I had visions of getting so much stuff done with my free time, because getting stuff done is my happy place, but my brain decided to embrace the way of the sloth and let go of the drive to complete things that were not holiday-related.
I hosted my folks for Christmas eve. We had a lovely time and will be eating ham until it comes out our ears*. We wrapped in time to attend midnight mass, which wasn't that much of a trial because we were all used to staying up way too late over break. I just had to make sure to alternate wine with coffee during the party so as to be sober enough to pull off a solo rendition of "O Holy Night." I love that song, but it's not the easiest to sing properly. Christmas morning was full of presents and good food and cozy-ness, followed by dinner and visiting with MIL. SIL and BIL were unable to join the festivities as they were both ill, her with some unspecified malady and him with a prolonged stomach virus. Nephew, baby, and baby momma did come and fortunately didn't bring germs with them (as evidenced by our continued health, knock on wood).
The week following was full of leftovers, late mornings, and lazy days. MD chose Indian for her birthday dinner as she'd been craving lamb biriyani for weeks. For NYE we ate snacks and watched "Dr. Strange." "Superhero" is the one category of family friendly movies that isn't too saccharine or boring. I did actually have to set an alarm on NYD to get up and cover two masses for our organist, as he'd scheduled me to fill in several weeks prior. I came home, made brunch, then made stuffed cabbages and a mountain of mashed potatoes and had the grandparents and guncles over to celebrate birthdays. I got Eldest an ice cream cake from her first place of employment. MD requested a spice cake, so I found a recipe for a three-layer gingerbread cake with maple bourbon icing. The icing was a keeper, the cake was okay. I'd probably do spice cake from a mix were I to make it again. Cake mixes are always so much lighter.
Yesterday was mostly morose at the prospect of a return to normal life. "Mostly" because Eldest still has a week off school (but will work every day, except she got today's shift covered as it's her actual bday; she has requested sushi for dinner), and because too much family togetherness makes people snippy. It became obvious that it's time for people to go back to their respective occupations. (before I clobber them)
*Husband's work sent him home with a 17.5lb semi-boneless ham, which is a. lot. of. ham.
