Just for the record (this doesn't apply to the guy in today's incident) but I linked in another thread to some information that made me think differently about some of these cases. Some Toyota transmissions are electronically shifted. There have been reports of some cars accelerating out of control and not switching gear when 'shifted' to neutral or even reverse. In the most highly publicized case the guy probably still could have saved himself by switching the engine off but he may not have known to hold down the button for three seconds. In a panic and traveling at 120 mph I wouldn't think to do that either before all this happened. Just food for thought, I know it doesn't apply to all cases and people should still know to at least try and shift to neutral.
