Another simple way to get your iron levels up is to cook in cast-iron pans. A little bit of the iron leeches into your food. I found this out from the nurse at my doc's office when I was slightly anemic, but couldn't take iron supplements because they made me too sick.

I unfortunately haven't been able to donate in years cause of the dumb migraines.
