Shapeshifter sounds an awful lot like a townie power role backup.
Given the chess motif, and given a pawn can promote to any number of things, such as a queen or a rook, a shapeshifter sounds an awful lot like a chess piece that can change shapes, which would be a
backup.
Since she's revealed as town, and as shapeshifter, that makes it highly unlikely that she is the mafia Godfather. Such a specific reveal tells us she was legitimately townie.
The role of a shapeshifter only makes sense as a town backup. Shifting shape in another sense, such as appearing guilty upon scan, is more of a classic Miller type role and there are no Millers in this game as per the rules.
