Quote box text: italicized or not?

In response to a casual inquiry, I went off half-cocked and changed the style of quote boxes to mimic a recent change at the SDMB, wherein the quoted text is no longer italicized by default, thus preserving any italics used by the quotee to make it clear what a dick they think you are.

Now, I shall query the membership to see how they feel about this change. Please vote, and vote hard.

In honesty I hadn't really noticed but my preference is for a straight quote with no messing. If one uses italics for emphasis and then is quoted the emphasis is lost. It's only a small change to the meaning but goddamn it niggles.

Which would be great, if the board did that. But it doesn't. It just puts everything in italics. The formatting markup itself is preserved if you quote the post that contains the quote, but the way it's rendered by the board doesn't distinguish in any way between text in the quote that does and does not have italics. Everything just ends up italicized, which loses any emphasis that was created that way in the original material.

And also, there is no markup to de-italicize text. So you cannot put the emphasized bit (or really, just put the entire quote) in regular type, if the quote code sets it to italics.

To de-italicize text, all one has to do is reverse the tags like this .

At the risk of ridicule, I kind of like some of the elements to the quote boxes over at Mellophant... the colored background and, to a lesser extent, the little opening quote graphic that comes at the very beginning. I don't know how easy it is to mix and match these sorts of things, but my ideal Evil Giraffe quote box would NOT be auto-italicized and would have a background color the same as the one used between and just outside of posts.

No there isn't, in quote boxes that force italics. Which is the specific context we're discussing. No matter what combination of italics coding you use, when the board forces all attributed quotes to italics, the entire quote is italicized.
