French Press Mess?

So I've got a french press, love it, blablabla, but SOMETIMES the plunger part is impossible to press down. I struggle, and usually wind up with coffee all over the counter plus the plunger still doesn't go down much--what am I doing wrong? Or is this just punishment for using a french press, and cannot be averted?

One thing I learned is that when they tell you to use coarse ground coffee it's not just a whimsical suggestion--too fine a grind will clog the plunger and it won't work worth a lick after that. Also, if you're filling it very full that could be an issue as well. Aside from that I got nothing, because I use a press every day and have never had a problem with it. It's the easiest coffee making system I've ever used. And the coffee is delicious.

Hmmm. I do use fine ground coffee. I use this espresso, actually, that I like the taste of and is really cheap and really good. The funny thing is that I only have a hard with the plunger once every three or four times I make coffee, always with the pre-ground espresso.

Ditto what SA said. Course ground coffee works best with the ol' press.

Buy whole beans with an espresso roast and grind your own. Whole beans stay fresher longer anyhow.

Yadda it's good to have courser grind -- but don't plunge too vigorously or you'll not only be in a world of shit, you'll run a risk of having boiling water running down your arms plus broken glass.

Trust me -- I only use a French Press for years and I break them all the time. You don't want either of those scenarios to happen described above. Or you'll be in a world of shit.

Yep. Just buy espresso roast and grind the beans yourself. If you use the in-store grinder, set it to the largest grind possible - it will probably say "french roast." The fine espresso grind is the only reason I can think of that would cause difficulty with the plunger, why the inconsistency? Not sure, but it could be simply a slight difference in time from one day to the next, or whether the grounds were swirled before plunging.

Folger's 100% Columbian works fine in a French press.
You may all line up and sneer at me now.

Wow, you get the fancy stuff! My Folger's canister just says "100% Coffee"; no mention of Colombia.

Nothing but the finest! Regular Folgers does clog up a French press. Go figure.

The key to dealing with a clogged press is to take your time. Get yourself something to read, and just rest your arm on the press for awhile. The plunger will slowly sink down with no scorching hot geysers.
