Can you see other people's avatars on the SDMB? In this thread, for example, there are a bunch of people with them.

OK, so you've installed Greasemonkey. Do you have a little monkey icon on your toolbar? Is he greyed out? What happens if you click on him and then click on "Manage User Scripts..."? Is there an SDMB Avatar script in there?

OK, let's back up. What browser are you using? If it's not Firefox or Chrome, you need to use one of those.
Click here to get Firefox Click here to get Chrome If it is, you need to install the Greasemonkey addon. Click here to install Greasemonkey in Firefox If you have Chrome, let me know and I'll find a link for Greasemonkey for that. (I only use Firefox.) |

Greasemonkey is built into Chrome.

How can I use built-into-Chrome Greasemonkey to view avatard (*snerk*) SDMB?

Go to this page, and click on Install.
Click "Continue" in the dialogue box at the bottom of the screen. If you want to save the script as a file in a place of your choice so you can edit it (with Notepad, so there's no formatting happening), right click on "Install", and click "Save Link As", then save it where you want. You can then drag and drop the file into any instance of Chrome to install it. SDMB thread with all this info and more here. |

I don't use Firefox, but this page, from the site that hosts the add on, is a guide to installing in Firefox.
I would follow the link to Greasemonkey from that page, click "Download Now", follow the instructions from there, which will include restarting your browser, and then return to the SDMB Avatar page, and click "Install". If that doesn't work, hopefully someone who uses Firefox will be along. |

firefox addons don't require grease monkey
There are scripts that require it but those aren't technically called "addons" even if they often can perform similar functions. edit: actually, firefox considers greasemonkey an "addon" |

Yeah, been there. Either me or my computer is too stupid to figure this shit out.
You decide which. |

If GM itself has been installed in your Firefox, then you should be able to click Tools > Add-ons > Get user scripts, then type SDMB in the search box and find Crazyhorse's installer for the avatar script itself.

Do I need to use optimum installer?

I don't understand what that means. If you have Greasemonkey installed, clicking that link should just open a box saying "oh look a Greasemonkey script, do you want to install this?" and then you say Continue. If you're seeing something else, please describe.

I'm done fucking with it until the weekend so the frustration can drain off.
Maybe avatars aren't all that important after all. |
