Older movies taht would be cool in 3D
So cousin Crayons has a 3D projector and we were visiting over the weekend to check it out. It got me thinking... It is currently possible to take a movie filmed for 2D and do a post-production conversion to 3D.
Presently, the overall image quality suffers a bit — ex/ The Last Air Bender looked particularly shitty and murky (and it was also crap) — but there may be a point soon-ish where the conversion would actually look OK. I've always been kind of "meh" on 3D when used as a gimmick for sub-par flicks, but I was thinking there are a few movies that truly would look visually outstanding. The Dark Crystal: Amazing puppet characters and innovatively designed universe. There's already such a great, sculptural look to so much of it. Like imagine those creatures that were done with poeple on four-legged stilts! Time Bandits and the Adventures of Baron von Munchausen: granted in 3D some of the effects might suffer because they may have aged poorly a bit over time. Raiders of the Lost Ark: some of the stunt work would be awesome! Anything else? |

Tora! Tora! Tora! - Splosions! Airplanes! Japs!
Star Trek: The Motion Picture - That cloud was cool. Transporter accident. McCoy's beard. The Other Side of the Mountain - real life is 3D, man! Jaws 3 - SHARK! wait a minute... gotta check something... Never Mind |

What was the King Kong knock off that had a not-as-big-but-still-big ape named Guargantua or soemthing? It was on TV and for the weeks leading up to this "very special broadcast" you could get the red/blue 3D glasses at the corner store.
E.T. The Extra Terrestrial would probably have a more immersive feel to it. I was almost considering 2001: A Space Odessy, but to be honest ,with the complex story and the painterly approach to framing, I don't think 3D wuld actually add anything to the experience of the movie. Oh, but Blad Runner woudl look awesome, I bet! And why is it that when I think of all the really stunning visual movies, most of them are very dark? (Like night time dark, not Batman dark.) |

If you like dark then Van Helsing would be a good one.

Wow. It looks even stupider than I remember. And look at the cast! Raymond Burr, Anne Bancroft, Lee Marvin... What were they thinking? |

Not so much that I like dark, I'm just noticing as I rattle off "cool looking effects movies" in my head, they are all very dark, with lots of scenes taking place at night or in dimly lit interiors.
ETA: Also, I just realized they did a 3D reissue of Top Gun. ![]() |

And Die Hard, especially the exploding elevator scene and the exploding helicopter scene. |

In all fairness, the 'pie-pan' thing is a myth. Ed went out and bought a model flying saucer kit from a hobby shop. Which is possibly even more pathetic, but still...

I must have seen that movie a dozen* times, and all I ever saw looked like pie pans.
Other movies that would look great in 3D; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (Gene Wilder version) It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (original version) *For a long time, I never saw the very beginning of the movie - I always came in after it started. So I kept watching it because I figured if I saw how it started, the rest of it would make more sense. Nope. |
