Discussion of a better term for the mob's justice/vengeance in Mafia games
The term "lynch" is a problem, and it's better to have something else.
What should that something be? And what should we, as a very loose-knit internet community of people who enjoy figuratively stabbing each other in the back, expect from mods/gamerunners? |

I'll second Pleo's suggestion of Vote Off, when it comes to generic games of Mafia. With tbe caveat that most of my games tend to be heavily themed role madness games and part of that will likely include alternate names for being Voted Off.

Or eliminate?

We should do a Survivor’s themed mafia

I think "the vote off" works. It can be a death in game color if need be. (I am thinking of that great game with ghosts we had a while back, for one.)

I like eliminate as a generic term, but subject to color modifications.

"No lynch" then becomes "No Vote Off" in all games. Works for me.

I like "vote off" - it's very straightforward.
ETA: ah - the robot might need a minor tweak to deal with it; the above was typed [vote]Vote No Vote Off[/vote] |

I'll voice an early objection to "vote off." I think it's headed in the right direction, but I prefer a term akin to "eliminate," as suggested by Raventhief. It has a degree of finality and gravity to it that vote off lacks.
One thing I like about this game is the pressure, and I think the vocabulary plays into that. A group murder is a very very serious thing, and I think the term that is used should reflect that. It might be different if death weren't such a basic component. We have "night kills" and "serial killers" and "vigs." I just don't think "vote off" fits. |

This is where "vote off" would work.

It's quite simple, actually. I can't remember the last time I played a game where an actual lynch was part of the color. Just use whatever word the game's color happens to use. This places the onerous on the moderator who should ensure that his/her game has something in place.
Otherwise, I think the easiest term that requires the least amount of social re-engineering is "Day Kill". We already refer to a Night Kill. Why don't we just call the other thing a "Day Kill". How easy is that! |

To me, “Day Kill” is the power of a player to kill during the Day.
I don’t think we need a standard term and I like seeing all the ideas. It’s not like we use standard terms for other game mechanics and powers. |

So rare, that I think Day Kill could still work as a replacement for lynch. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a power role that could kill during the day that wasn't referred to as a Day Vig or something like that. In which case, it would just be referred to as getting Vigged, Day Vigged, etc.

These are great suggestions and I'm not opposed to "Day Kill." Thanks for starting this post, Pleo.
Since this is technically called "mafia", what about getting whacked? |

First choice, eliminate.
Second choice, vote off. Both can be killed in favor of in game color. |

That seems more like what the NK should be called.

I'm not much of a Mafia player although I've lurked the last few games...I think the term needs some degree of finality, some gravity, so I'm not a fan of 'vote off' as it seems so mild...
I agree the term should change based on the color of the game, but if we choose one term, I prefer, "eliminate". |

Hey, some of you haven’t signed up for my Kung Fu Mafia game. It starts tomorrow and we can still use more players.
“Town kill” is slightly misleading, since it’s all the players voting, not just town. |

This is difficult. I can tell you what doesn't sound right to be easier than what does. I thought Town Kill sounded alright, but Pleo had a good point about that. I don't know. Maybe Purge? But I don't know that even that works.

"Purge" sounds pretty good - if I ever think up a "Glory to Arstotzka!" Game, then I'd use that Just combing through the thread, here are the alternative so far (let me know if I missed one!) Democratically Chosen Sacrifice (DCS) Vote Off (VO) Eliminate Group Murder (GM) Day Kill (DK) Getting Whacked (GW) Town Kill (TK) Group Kill (GK) Voted Kill (VK) Purge I'll keep this list growing as we go so mods have a bunch of suggested alternatives they can pick from if their game doesn't already have an obvious choice from the color. Somewhere deep in the NSA Echelon servers, an AI routine has probably flagged my file just for typing that list ![]() |

How about Convicted and Sentenced? We're acting like a jury anyway, right.
Or is that too big of a term? C&S'd, maybe? |

Perhaps “elected”? It’s literally accurate and has a nice ironic ring to it.
“Getting whacked” has possibilities. It could be shortened to “whack”. It was whack or lose and we miswhacked. |

Stoned? It still implies mob violence, but without the racial implications? I don't like the scum getting a night kill and all we get to do is vote off. I want blood and gore.

You want to be careful not to change to another word that can be racially bent also.
Purge I think carries a negative connotation to Jews. I'd eliminate that as well. Day Kill has a slip value to it, that I don't think should be the replacement. I'm a fan of something strong like execute. |
