People who hardcode subtitles in AVI files should be shot.
Why the FUCK do they do this? Worse is when the audio is in English and the fucking subtitles are in English! WTF?
If you want to package subtitles with your video files, fine, but put them in a separate file, assfister. That is all. |

Well, they've effectively open, but not really in the traditional open/closed captioning sense.
Say for example I want to watch an episode of Oz that I missed. I don't want to buy the whole DVD set, since I've seen all the episodes but one, and it's not a series I'll want to see again. So I can go to the newsgroups and download it. It comes in a 700MB AVI file, but the subtitles are baked into the video. There are all sorts of tools out there that can dissect AVI files, separating video, audio and subtitles. These however only show two parts, video and audio. It seems what the AVI author did was turn on English subtitles (for English audio) at the video source and captured it like this. |

I fucking hate it when I try to get something for free and its not the exact way I want it. Fucking hate it!

No, I demand to be hanged for my defenseless transgressions. Oh, and burned. It's the only way to make things right, Jeff.
I think you should join me though, because criticizing people for downloading illegal content is, like, so 2002, especially when the discussion has really nothing to do with piracy. Your crime is cliche: punishable by hanging, burning, and watching your favorite movies (for free) with huge Greek subtitles, over and over. |

Eh, I think it's relatively spot-on. Let's take a less piratical example. If I want to dig up a specific song on YouTube, I might get frustrated that the only copies actually done by the artist have voice overlays by the recorder. However, this was all work done by them and not for me. God knows who they thought it was for, but hey. I can understand that it's not the kind of free video you want, and it makes it harder for you to find the ones you do want, but I don't think it's worth calling them some kind of human trash as a result.

No, an assfister would be me when I bring you a huge giftwrapped present of hundreds of the best movies and television shows, all ripped to AVI and placed on DVDs, and all with English subtitles embedded.
These guys aren't in the same league. |

I can't complain righteously when free things aren't to my liking. It's just the kind of thing that makes me despair of human nature, that's all.
If the Messiah came back today, turning water into wine, they'd complain it wasn't Merlot. Or that it was. If he healed the cripples, doctors and insurance companies would sue him for taking away their business. "There's no pleasing some people." "That's just what Jesus said, sir!" |

On a purely practical note, I got a batch of Buffy episodes with freaking ROMANIAN subtitles hard baked in and Media Player Classic wasn't able to parse out that the subs were there, however I tried a portable version of VLC and it was able to recognize the subs as a separate item and take 'em the hell out. VLC is, other than that one neat feature, a thoroughly buggy and inferior player to MPC but it's handy to have when you get something dumb like that. I also noticed that the last time I updated K-Lite they'd fixed that, so now MPC can play those Buffy files without annoyance. Sometimes trying a different application can get some good results. It's why there are different types of hammer.

You must have a different version than I have, as I don't even have a system tray icon, let alone one with a Santa hat.

I get the hate for English subs in an English language program--I'm text oriented and if there are words printed in front of me I have to read them, which means I can't actually give all my attention to the program. I love subtitled foreign movies, and don't mind too much seeing foreign language subs in an English program provided it's in an alphabet I can read, but the irritation of actually having to compare the spoken track with the subtitles in the same language (which often don't quite jibe) is a real pain and detracts from the experience considerably.

They may have done it that way to cater to deaf people downloading the file, and had no effective tool to remove them and and transmit a separate subtitle file. |

Re: the OP. You can't be bothered to pay for it, so don't complain about the quality of what you are stealing. And don't mistake me for being all anti-piracy; I've got several hundred DVDs on this here shelf full of illegal software and movies. Unless you want to go buy the DVD and rip it yourself with a separate subtitle track and put it out there for everyone, STFU and get over it. On a related note, I am very hard of hearing so I may be in the minority, but I'd rather have permanent subs than no subs at all. This drives my friends crazy because I always turn subtitles on when we watch movies together, but they can suck it. I wish I could turn subtitles on for them so I didnt' have to say "HUH?" twenty thousand times a day. |
