RIP JD Salinger...
I suppose now is the right time to finally read Catcher in the Rye

I heard about his death on Radio 4 this morning and vultures were circling already to see if he'd been secretly writing all these years. |

Apparently there are 15 manuscripts locked in a document vault in his house.

No wonder he didn't return my calls.

I know lots of people find CITR prententious, silly and lots of other unflattering adjectives, but it is definitely one of my favorite books. I've gone through several copies and have read it numerous times. I am looking forward to seeing what will be published now.
As for whether it's time to drank urine, it's after 11 am here, so I think you're in the clear. Knock yourself out. Edited to add, that Onion blurb is hilarious and a little bit true. |

Ah, I bet he had a team of very well-trained servants who knew their place and kept their mouths shut. Just because you're a recluse doesn't mean you have to live like one of those people on Hoarders.

He was 91 years old and recovering from a broken hip, I don't think he was left to his own devices all that much.

I went to college with a kid who was (or at least claimed to be) a relative of Salinger's. He said that JD wasn't near as crazy as people made him out to be, it's just that he didn't want any public attention. He still spoke to the family and had a life and all that, he was just very private.

Yeah, you got any copies of Catcher in the Rye lying around?

For the last twenty years, it's made very little difference if he was alive or dead.
He was the recluse's recluse. ETA - He never did thank Mark David Chapman for giving his royalties a shot in the arm. Last edited by Khampelf; 29th January 2010 at 08:30 PM. Reason: Hinkley had a copy in his hotel room, too. |

Hah! No, sorry. I do have several years' worth of the Mother Earth News, though, and I'm sure you could find out how to grow some rye in which to put a catcher.

I am actually a bit sad about this. I loved Catcher in the Rye but, IMO, it's not his finest book. I think I'd have to nominate Raise High the Roofbeam, Carpenters for that. That's one of my desert island books.
