The board search engine suggests that "DIAF" has been used in all of 58 out of 19,570 threads including this one, McFearful, so I don't think there's much reason for trepidation either way. Your clear concern about the potential effect of membership changes to the overall board culture is certainly to be admired, however... it's always good to be vigilant. Unless you're just bringing this up to be an asshole, in which case you can go DIAF.

No one made a fuss in this case, so I'm not sure where that fear is coming from. My comment about pragmatism is based on the question in your OP, namely whether the fact that we Boxed Charles for his comment creates a new restriction on the use of phrases like DIAF. And the answer is no, because we can live with letting 99.99% of hyperbolic death wishes slide while clamping down on the 0.01% that are unreasonably assholish, even if it means we lose the perfect consistency award.

I don't see how that relates to the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" issue, which impacts all message boards regardless of their rules. Borderline posts that get reported are more likely to receive mod attention than those that don't, it's just a fact of life.

Giraffe, you were part of the mod corps at the Dope that afforded Dio the obvious double standard. He wasn't held to the same "don't be a jerk" standard as everyone else. Hajario boxed CDA (albeit deservedly) while extending a welcome to Dio. Hajario is one of your mods, this is your board. This looks, walks, and quacks like how he was treated over there.
