October's on top of it. (mini-raves)

I have a many appointments coming up, but I've verified I've got transportation for all of them. Between my brother, dad and movie buddy's dad I've got rides to every appointment. No Ubering or calling cabs. It all makes me feel loved, supported and transported.

We got some, but the big deluge they are predicting hasn't started yet. They promise it will come down hard starting overnight.

It's raining hard and steady and has been a while. My rave is not having to go out in it.

Well, we might make a 'quick' Costco trip for just a few items. That's not until later in the afternoon. I hope the rain gives us a break. But if not, I'm not made of sugar. It's only toilet paper, yogurt and orange juice that we are after. I'm a real pig for orange juice lately, using it as a digestive agent of sorts. Yay for OJ!

I believe we have found the flea solution!

Oliver, in his end days, loved nothing more than to lie in the sun. When the sun got to be too much for him, he'd lie under the bushes or under the porch, where he contracted fleas and passed them to Fluff Pup.

We treated Fluff Pup with Advantix, which has always been effective in the past. No dice. We got Fluff Pup a Seresto collar. She still had fleas. We washed Fluff Pup with Dawn dishwashing liquid and re-treated her with Advantix and put the collar back on and consulted the vet and NOTHING WORKED. We've all been itching, Fluff Pup especially, for months.

In desperation, we got NexGard from the vet. 24hrs later Fluff Pup is six-legged critter free! It was downright creepy how fast and effective it was, and we don't really want to give her oral flea meds on the regular, but it's such a relief to find something effective! We can cuddle the snuggly dog again!

The older flea meds no longer work. I use Revolution, or a clone, which still works. The oral meds are most effective.

I think the global economy is underappreciated:

1) My local Lidl sells coconut fish sticks. A German grocery chain buys fish from the Bering Sea, ships it to France for processing, ships it back across the Atlantic to a distribution center in North Carolina, then trucks it to my local store, keeping it frozen the whole time. All for just $1.99... and somehow everyone in the supply chain makes money.

2) I ordered a book from Amazon UK at 2:42AM Sunday morning. With standard "slow boat" shipping ("arrives by October 25") the total would have been $18.79. For $3.92 more, I could ship it via "AmazonGlobal Expedited Shipping" ("arrives by October 15"). But for just 48¢ more I could get it TODAY via "AmazonGlobal Priority". So that's what I did. It's kind of amazing that a book was in an Amazon distribution center at Heathrow Airport on Tuesday... and less than 24 hours later a DHL driver was handing it to me!

I completely agree. Shipping and logistics especially.

Not as astounding as your book order, but I ordered a camera years ago from B&H. I ordered at after 2:00p.m. on December 23rd. Shipping was free. I had it in my hands at 10:00a.m. December 24th.

I'm back from the lawyers office. Making the will went very smoothly. There was only one piece of info missing, and we found that quickly and left a message. It's the most adulty of all the adulting I've even adulted, but it feels good now. Probate should be fairly easy for my heirs. My affairs are in order, as they say.

So, couple of years ago MsPuna and I joined Weight Watchers and had some success -- I dropped from 308 down to the 280s in about three months and managed to stay there for quite awhile. WW deserted this whole corner of Colorado, so we've been struggling to keep our weight from going back up. We're like a couple of alcoholics trying to stay sober and they pulled the AA out from under us. We support each other as best we can.

Recent illnesses and their attending medications utterly robbed me of my appetite for several weeks, but that's not a bad thing, as it turns out. Over the past few months I have learned that my body does quite well on about half the calories I used to ingest. I'm down under 260 now, walking 2 miles almost daily, and feeling pretty damn spry for an old fart. I've re-discovered a plethora of slacks and assorted other pants in my closet that I can wear again, so life is pretty good.

For now.

That's all sounds pretty good there, 'Puna. I'm shedding weight too, I'm down under 130 and I started the year around 155. Hooray for health and well being!

Does jumping to conclusions and making leaps of faith count as exercise? I could walk more, now that I'm more confident going out and about. I still don't feel up to anything more strenuous. I sometimes have to ask people to slow down when walking with me. But a slow stroll through the barrio I could and should do. Maybe tomorrow.

Any other bequests you want to announce in advance? Does Haj get something useless? Does Rebo get something nice? Have you thrown out anything for Roo or Barbi down in the box?

I hope you took this advantage to send some messages... Hopefully, it'll be a substantial number of years before we see 'em, but, hey, announcing in advance that someone's gonna get stiffed lets you gloat while you're still here to see the reaction. The standard "To my nephew, Durpworth, I leave nothing but a moldy slice of bread. He knows why." is grossly unsatisfying to the rest of us, because we want to know 'Why?', and Durpworth's scream of 'NOOOOO!' toward the sky is kinda unsatisfying on that point.

Earlier this week, I showed my Halloween sketches to my department's new VP (he was curious what we were planning.) Then I showed him photos of our previous displays.

This morning he came over to my desk and handed me $100 for supplies.

That is really cool, Amythyst. Bonus!

I had a really good day. Slothed around all morning, had a good talk with my dad about all the recent events. He took me to the clinic for my iron infusion, and we talked more there. We got one errand knocked off on the way back, too. Later in the afternoon, J took me to the new pharmacy that had a 'magic mouthwash' for me. I had declined it because the mouth sores weren't too bad. Then I filled a prescription my PCP (not the clinic) gave me, but it was a 'mix it yourself' affair, much bother. So I called the new pharmacy to reactivate the scrip for stuff the clinic prescribed. The new stuff is all mixed up already and works better. Everything is a trade off, though. The new stuff seems to take more of the sensation of taste away. I ate like a champ with little pain, but didn't taste much. I got Thai food for everyone tonight and gave myself a wicked case of Thai-burn on my tongue without noticing. I didn't make myself a PM pot of coffee, but I have had two energy drinks in two hours, after six even. I'll be up a while, I wager. All in all an excellent day, everything on the agenda taken care of, and the G-man is coming down for the weekend. I predict more good times.

Sounds like a good day. Give the G-dog some love from me.

And FFS if a prescription is reasonably priced and might be helpful, fill it. The it's there if you need it.

I had a really good visit with my folks, catching up on stuff, and just generally talking and being companionable. They came over to take me to the clinic for blood labs and we went out for breakfast after. They really enjoy my local diner, and the food was excellent again. Now I have nothing on my agenda until Wednesday morning. Slack will rule.

I cobbled together a blissful dessert out of a failed cake attempt.

I tried making spongecake Japanese-style (eggs and sugar beaten together in a double boiler before stirring in cake flour & cornstarch). It was topnotch, except I baked it in too big of a cake pan and it overbaked a little due to being too thin.

So I thought I'd try making an English trifle for the first time with the dry-ish spongecake. Trouble was, I didn't have jam or berries or sherry. Rather than go to the store, I thought of what I had on hand and decided on a coconut/coffee/rum/banana trifle.

I made an eggy custard and flavored it with coconut, and put it to one side. I made some espresso and flavored it with rum extract, and sliced a banana. Then I rolled the cake pieces in the espresso, and layered them in a deep dish with the coconut custard and the sliced bananas. Then I topped it all off with whipped cream.

Good God, that stuff's good. It's like trifle, tiramisu, and southern banana pudding all had a threeway and this was the result. I have to write it all down before I forget just how I did it.

Spent the weekend in upstate NY in the foothills of the Adirondacks visiting family and friends.

We get together every Columbus Day weekend to catch up, kill pumpkins with hand held weapons, have some fireworks, beers, food, a bonfire and sleep under the stars.

We've been doing this for over 15 years. Most of us are friends from way back; many as old as elementary school.

This year as a surprise, one of my oldest friends married his girlfriend at our gathering, with a couple of friends officiating and us all as witnesses.

Best weekend I've had in a long time. And yeah, I cried. I like seeing my buddy happy, and they are a great couple.

I've got a micro-mini-rave. I got off my ass for an hour, dragged the recycling bin from the curb to the house empty. I got it out there full last night. I also ran a load of dishes. Not much to rave about, but it was the first time since the surgery I was both interested and feeling active and able enough. The issue is all the bending over, but I seem to be able to do that now. Some things I squatted for, but the left leg doesn't like that. Still I managed, put a load away and ran another. Small stuff, but it felt like accomplishment.

Ten years ago a friend of ours got us a brand new front door with leaded glass insert, retails for $550, for about $125. It's been in the garage ever since. Three times I've lined up contractors to mount the door, each time they came out, took one look at the factory-built house and said, "Nope!"

I finally found a local contractor who actually makes part of his living by retro-fitting standard stuff (doors and windows, mostly) to pre-fab houses. Yesterday the door went in. MsPuna is delighted to see sunshine coming through the front door.

It was worth the 10-year wait.

checked my account this morning and I had another paycheck which was a relief. I been out on sick leave and was being paid by sick time so I am not expecting another check this month. I am just happy I can hold on to this check and make last until November

Going to see one of my favorite bands, Umphreys Mcgee, tomorrow night with 4 of my buddies. I managed to score Orchestra Pit tix for us.

Should be a fun night! They put on a helluva show.

Hooray for small victories, home improvements, extra paychecks and fantastic times out with buddies. All rave-able. Rave on, my friends.

That's great news! I'd definitely call that a win.

I've got another small win. I had a much anticipated, but carefully nibbled, pizza feast. It doesn't sound like much, it was just frozen pizza, but after days of yogurt and cheerios, it was a right treat. I even got a chocolate shake for dessert. A bigger win is that I see a nutritionist Wednesday to find out how to actually eat healthy and safely on stuff I'll actually eat. I'm a bachelor who hates to cook, so I'm starting out two steps behind on the wrong foot. But I'm sure my diet will improve with a little professional advice.
