Return of the Clowns signups

Let's try this again and see if we can't get a more exciting game.

Same rules as before:

10 Town, 3 Scum. 13 of the following 14 roles are randomly distributed to players without regard for alignment. The scum will be told which is the “leftover” 14th role for possible claim cover.

Some important rules:

Players’ alignments will be revealed upon their death, but their role will NOT.

All roles expire and everyone is Vanilla as of Dawn of Day 5!

The scum kill counts as a power, must be assigned to a particular player, and can be watched, etc. The scum kill is mandatory; if the scum do not submit a kill, a random scum player and town victim will be selected for them. No player can use more than one power on the same Night.

Powers may only be used on the Nights indicated; no do-overs if you get blocked.

If you fail to submit a target, I may choose a target for you at random if it seems like a clear error (i.e. if there is no reasonable case that using your power could have been counterproductive for your team). Therefore, if you, for some odd reason, want to make SURE you don't use an available power, you should PM me to that effect.

Night 2 Cop/ 1-shot Ninja
Night 3 Cop/ 1-shot Ninja
Night 2 Vig
Night 3 Vig
Odd Night Watcher
Even Night Watcher
Odd Night Tracker
Even Night Tracker
Night 1 Role Cop/ Night 3 Doc/ 1-shot Strongman
Even Night Doc/ 1-shot Strongman
Odd Night Roleblocker
Even Night Roleblocker
Voyeur/ Night 3 Jailkeeper
Even Night Jailkeeper

Role explanations:

Cop -- learns the alignment of the target
Role Cop -- learns the role of the target
Watcher -- learns who else, if anyone, targeted the target
Tracker -- learns who, if anyone, the target targeted
Doc -- target is immune to Night kills, subject to all other powers
Roleblocker -- target may not use any powers, is still subject to other powers
Jailkeeper -- target may neither use nor be affected by any powers
Vig -- kills the target
Strongman -- overrides all protections and roleblocks in order to kill target
Ninja -- can't be seen by Watchers, Trackers, or Voyeurs

The Strongman and Ninja powers are only usable if the player is performing the scum kill (i.e. they do not provide an extra kill in addition to the regular scum kill, and they don't work to make non-killing powers unblockable or undetectable).

The Voyeur targets a player and learns what sort of actions, if any, they were targeted with on that night.
Positive readings are as follows:
Investigative (Cop, Watcher, Tracker, Role Cop)
Protective (Doc)
Roleblocking (Roleblocker)
Killing (scum, Vigs)
Players targeted by Jailkeepers will randomly read as either Protective or Roleblocking.

Watchers, Trackers, and Voyeurs will be able to tell the difference between a negative result and being blocked.

Order of operations:
Jailkeeper
Roleblocker
Everything else
Killing

(IOW, a Jailkeeper can't be roleblocked, but a roleblocker can be jailkept; any other role can be blocked or jailkept)

I like this setup because everyone has a power but it isn’t overpowered. All those Watchers and Trackers, plus the nigh-inevitable eventual mass claim, force the scum to choose between making risky fake claims and using their powers only in plausibly town-motivated ways.

Usual rules, don’t screenshot your PM, random tiebreak, No Yeet is a valid vote, blah blah. Talk about whatever you like at Night. Please ask if you have any specific rules questions. Apologies to the Europeans but EoDs will be late evening US time.
Color, if any, will not be as good as last game.

Activity requirements: Five posts or one vote per Day. Offenders may be warned, modkilled, or subbed at my discretion.

Last game I never did know what these roles were:
Night 2 Cop/ 1-shot Ninja
Night 3 Cop/ 1-shot Ninja
Night 1 Role Cop/ Night 3 Doc/ 1-shot Strongman
Even Night Doc/ 1-shot Strongman
For starters, does '/' mean AND or OR? Does alignment affect the role?

Slash means "and".

The Strongman and Ninja powers can only be used on a Night when the player is performing the scum kill, so they are useless if the player who has them is Town.

For example, the N1 Role Cop/ N3 Doc / 1-shot Strongman has a Rolecop power on Night 1 and a Doc power on Night 3. If they are scum, they also have the option of performing the scum kill on any Night, and they also have a one-shot Strongman ability, which they may use on any Night. However, if they perform the scum kill (whether they use the Strongman power or not) on Night One or Three, they won't be able to use their other powers those Nights.

Since the scum kill is mandatory, that means that if there is only a single scum alive, that player must kill every Night and can't use any other powers (except for Strongman and Ninja, if available).

Trying to decide whether or not to play. I'll be on vacation from this weekend until sometime in the week after Independence Day. Which will give me enough time to vote and not much more. I think I'll hold off joining for now, to give a more active player the spot instead. If there's still a need for a player at some point, I could within my upcoming limitations.

By the way, I think this is a great set up. Good mix of powers, without being dominated by powers. First run through ran into "town figured out scum quickly" and there's nothing that can be done to balance against that. Of course, this run-through maybe scum will get a vig power and win the game on Night Three. There is the potential for a lot of swing.

General Announcement:

This is supposed to be an open setup. Nothing is secret. If you don't understand how something works, or wonder how I might handle some particular hypothetical situation, please ask, either in the thread or by PM.

I think this game I am going to be more proactive and address players who seem to be misunderstanding something, even if they don't directly question me about it.

While waiting for the game to start, you can cheer on Lightfoot in her Champs game here.

If anyone would like to follow along and discuss it we should start a private chat as we're not supposed to talk about it here.

Is there a private chat? I know I had vowed, after reading that one game, to stay the hell away from MU forever, but..I did look at LF's game.

Sorry to see you out, Swammi.

Welcome, bladescape! I don't think we've met. In my games Day phase lasts 3-4 days, generally 3 if they are all weekdays and 4 if there is a weekend involved.

So Pizza, what does that make us?

Wish I'd come back sooner, missed your exit. Hopefully, you do still run something at some point and I can at least play in it.

Also I'm that weirdo that added you on Disc a few weeks ago with a pokemon cup avatar. (Assuming you even still use Discord at all.)

I basically only ever used Discord to hang out with mafia peeps, and since I retired, it is one less thing I need to check every day. I do miss everyone, it's just hard to keep up when I can't be actively involved in much anymore.

Well, bump?

Also kid stuff: Inspired by my terrible example my kid just quit his job. Only ... mine was one of a hodgepodge of freelance/gig/independent contractor shit that makes my taxes a nightmare, his was 40 hour week. Also he was four shifts away from getting laid off because the place was closing down, and with a decent severance package. On the plus side he is now thinking about college, which he had written off at about age 16 with "no way I hate school and college is stupid." So that might be good.

I'm almost done being 37, but my wife is a year and a half my senior.

We are going to be raising teens when we are in our mid 50s, so ya know. That's gonna be tough.

Due to the expected delivery date, my daughter will be close to exactly 38 years younger than me. She's basically young enough to be a granddaughter, if I had a kid at 19 and that kid had a kid at 19.

We had two options: both never have kids or try really quick before we got too old, because "too old" for us is really soon.

It's going to be tough but it is so worth it. I had my first at 19 and at 23 I had my 2nd. I lost a lot of my youth but they make up for it. There is never a good time to have kids but once they are there they change your world. I made up for being a parent so young once they grew up though hehe.

There is no optimal age for raising teenagers. When it happens you will be as ready for it as anyone is.

NO.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

All of you guys are supposed to be older than me.

83 isn't too bad. I mean it's not like it's 82 or anything.

5 year catchup for bladescape:

Rand town, find 2-3 scums, get murdered. Lose game. Except champs, where 2 of the 3 scums accidentally hard outed themselves on day 2 (which became a meme), and although I had a winning POE, with the final scum at the very bottom of my town leans pile, I was yeeted before I could POE the final scum. And then town went on to yeet my strongly cleared townies and we lost.

Rand mafia, win game, or sub in to a very losing position and help losing team get to final 3 and still lose. (Those are the only two outcomes. Dead serious)

I only recently started winning games as town again. It's been a nice change of pace.

Also I got yeeted recently, as town. On day one! It was certainly different. That never happens to me.

That game was the Alpha picks teammates, and I assumed half the game would assume I would be one of the teammates picked by an Alpha, either to deny my being on the town team, or because I am an experienced wolf.

So, I went into my picks with the assumption I'd be dead early, which wasn't a stretch to imagine. I picked 4 people I had never played with before, 2 who were GITP regulars / veterans that I just happened to not have played with, and 2 brand newbies who only started playing at GITP that game. The idea being, people would then be playing the "who would Pizza pick" game, which is one of the classic blunders.

I wasn't planning on dying day one, Murska actually cold read me like a boss and I probably made an uncharacteristic d1 mistake. If I remember correctly, it wasn't just a "pizza was probably picked" type of case. I probably did something he found legit scummy, which is why I was impressed he saw it.

Still, if I die day one or day three, it's the same thing, just in a different order, and it just gets town going down the "what would pizza do" line of thinking even earlier, which isn't recommended.

So the two brand newbies won their first game on GITP against a stacked town full of town powers, which is pretty boss.

The order matters to town's solve, but it can also negatively affect their solve. It's like when Fleeing Coward kept distancing from Banjo all game, in my signature on that site, and when I called him out on that just when Banjo was finally being wagoned, town still yeeted Banjo first and then didn't follow up with FC.

If they had done FC first, Banjo would still have no reason to be considered townie, because he was the busee, not the busser. And even after this was explained to town, town still fell for it.

It makes no difference to the scums' victory condition the order in which they die and the order in which town kills townies, as long as one wolf survives. They aren't solving the game very much except by finding town powers, so it's not alignment they are generally solving for. The order only matters to townies. It can help them solve the game due to additional hard data, but it can also hurt them, because headgames rely on the order of deaths.

Consider that Alpha game. If I was the fifth scum to be yeeted that game, and all my partners investigated or vigged or yeeted first, then none of my Alpha picks would have mattered to interfering with town's solve. There would have been no logical reason to discount me as a suspect, once the unconventional picks were all revealed. It's only when the reveals are inverted that it makes it harder to guess.

Information can help with town's solve, but certain information can hinder it as well. Just depends on what gets revealed and in what order.

I tried to follow the last game here and I was able to start reading it properly on night 2. That doesn't mesh well with being an active player.

I can either become a 5 post per day wonder or I can retire. Since I don't know how to pace myself like that, it's retirement o clock.

We can keep talking / catching up elsewhere, Eristic still needs players.

Oh Pizza, it would be so good to have you back. You would enjoy it too and we would understand when the brand new Baby was born. My friends here allowed me to grieve over my Monty and I will cherish that. (they might have to help with my baby Victoria (14) cos she's not looking well at the moment)

I'd hate missing 95 percent of every round and not having the hours needed to cold read people properly.

Even worse, I'd end up needing to sub out of games. That adds a burden to game hosts, and the players will have at least a day where they can't cold read my slot. If I ended up being scum, it would be unfair to the town players because I wasn't providing them with something to chase or mistakes to point out. Game just becomes a gamble.

If that were unexpected I could cut myself a break but since it would be rather predictable, it's no good.

Every several days I might have a chance to sit and think for 3-4 hours. Maybe. Not even sure about that.

That’s partly why I’m so hectic with my reads lately. I got an almost 2 year old now, and finding time to Mafia is hard…

Hey, everyone, I will be out of town June 30-July 7, but should have internet available most of the time.

I should be available most days, but not June 30 or July 7 much due to travel.
