Greatest Hit of the '70s, Round 2a: Love's Theme (1974) vs. Sunshine on My Shoulders (1974)
"Love's Theme" by Love Unlimited Orchestra (#3 song of 1974) vs. "Sunshine on My Shoulders" by John Denver (#18 song of 1974)
To reduce the chances that two strong songs would meet in Round 2, criteria were used to assign songs to the top or bottom half of the remaining field. "Love's Theme" was considered to be a relatively strong contender for being Billboard's #3 Hot Single of 1974. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All poll threads in this megapoll for "Love's Theme" by Love Unlimited Orchestra All poll threads in this megapoll for "Sunshine on My Shoulders" by John Denver |

I don't think that "top 5 in the annual list is a very good indicator of strength. Only 21 of songs ranked 5 or higher won their round 1 match. 42% is not good.

It's not a great indicator but I thought it was worth having in the criteria mix, just for yuks if for no other reason. Plus in a sense it is not just that the songs are Top 5 but are Top 5 and survived Round 1. There are only 8 songs getting the dubious benefit of meeting only this criterion so this is all pretty academic anyway.

Sunshine on My Shoulders makes me sleepy,
Love’s Theme on the playlist makes me fly. |
