And now Raquel Welch dies
She was 82. I thought she was a lot younger than that.

No, that's about right. And she still had the looks.

I suppose I'm at the age when the cultural icons I grew up with will start dying with regularity, but damn it makes me feel old.

Raquel made an appearance in Portland while filming scenes for Kansas City Bomber; a local dive bar was featured in the movie, and they still have memorabilia from that time.
The first movie I saw her in was Mother, Juggs and Speed, an easy-forgettable 70s flick. Years later I stumbled across Myra Breckinridge in the "Critics Pick" section of my favorite video store, but I didn't rent it. Now I wish I had. |

Her memorable cameo in The Magic Christian is the first time I recall seeing her--or maybe that one where she wore the bunnyfur bikini. That lady had the [Madeline Kahn] bone structchah[/MK] of the gods for sure. I sometimes wonder if women like her and Helen Mirren didn't make some sort of deal with a goddess to be so fine looking so late into life--I guess it could be plastic surgery but if it is, then the doc involved might have done a deal with the devil to get the right hands for the job.
I'm feeling old too--first album I ever bought with my own money was Sgt Pepper and I remember thinking how unfathomably old being 64 would be and now I'm here. Sigh. |

She was a San Diego girl. La Jolla high 1959, I think, and she went to SDSU. Go Aztecs.

And of Mrs. Welsh - that's another bucket list item that I won't be checking off. Damnit! |
