I would Like Share ".Icns" Files
I would like to share Mac icon files in the ".icns" format. I have a nice little collection on my laptop.
I have created a subreddit entitled "MacIcons." At the moment there is nothing on it. I wanted to place the files on PhotoBucket and then link them to the subreddit. That will not work as PhotoBucket will not accept ".icns" files. Where else might I host them? Or is there some other way to proceed? |

Just so ya know, PhotoBucket is kind of... laughed at at Reddit. It's like having an AOL email address. 95% of the image postings there are on Imgur, and a lot of Redditors won't bother clicking on non-Imgur links (due to Imgur's tight integration via RES).
Imgur doesn't support any type of icon file, though. Perhaps you could share them via Google Drive or OneDrive or Dropbox? Whichever app works best on Mac, I guess. |

(I am about a million years old.)
I tried DropBox, it seems the problem is with Reddit. It does not seem to like this format. Thank you. |

Browsers can't render images in any format but jpg, gif, png and maybe tiff (I don't think so tho). So you can't upload them to display anywhere on any site.
What you should do is take a screeshot of your Finder folder that has your icon collection in it - presumably it shows all of the icons as images? - and then share that. You can then make a zip file that includes all of the .icns files and upload that zip file to Dropbox and share that alongside the image. You can also put the icons in to sets by putting them in different Finder folders and zipping them in different sets so people can just get the set they want. |

I may have to take my computer into the office and have a Smart Person show me how to do this.

I think dropbox is the way to go. You can drag any kind of folder in and share it with a link.

OK, let me try that again.

That works, but only for people who have a dropbox account.

Grumble. I think I began to lose mastery of technology when DVDs went away. Thank you for your help. It is bedtime here.

Nah. I share Dropbox links with non-Dropbox users several times a week and have never had a problem. I don't know how it works on a Mac, but in Windows you just right-click on a file in your Dropbox folder and choose "Copy Dropbox link". Here are Mac instructions. When users click such a link, they'll get a pop-up asking them to login, but they can click "Cancel, and go to file" and see the file. There's a download dropdown, where they can download the file directly, or login to their own Dropbox account and save it there.
And yeah, I forgot the second part of my post, which was to zip them up into an archive file. After I thought about it, I realized the only icons I've ever downloaded directly from the Internet were favicon.ico files, and that was in the 90s. Every other icon I've downloaded has been in a zip file, even single icons. |

When I follow the link in post #7, it takes me to a login page.

I logged in and it said the folder wasn't found. Maybe Paul deleted it.

Yeah, the link in post #7 doesn't look right. Here's Paul's link:

I tried it and to share with anyone you need a pro upgrade. So fuck that noise.
I was very able to create this in google drive. I just selected the folder and clicked the link icon; it says anyone can view it. Let me know if it works for you. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3...ENnWW1NV09ZVnc |

Sorry for the content, to those who are diabetic. I put that collection together for my wife to watch while she was in labor. Shit, I just made it worse, didn't I?

Since I seem to be the guinea pig, tunaman's link took me to this (after I declined a popover to sign in):

And Plumbean's link took me to a whole whack of saccarine photos, with no nagging to sign up. |

Yeah, apparently Dropbox will parse txt files and display it on the page. You should also see a "Download" box in the upper right. Clicking this should give you the option of downloading it directly or saving it to your own Dropbox (after login, of course).

Then you're doing it wrong. I have a free Dropbox account, and was able to share a file with Jaglavak.

A file is not the same thing as a folder.

Doesn't matter. If I "Get Dropbox link" a folder - any folder in my Dropbox account - then open that link on my GF's laptop, I get a list of files in that folder, with the same download\"Save to my Dropbox" button. The only difference is, when I share a folder the download option changes from "Direct Download" to "Download as a Zip", which would be the preferred behavior for such an action.
EDIT: Try it yourself: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qzbbpdr1b...uGMxNiBCa?dl=0 It should be a folder of pictures of Iclandic actress Heida Reed. |

Follow-Up: If you're trying to share a folder, are you using the "Share" or "Get Dropbox link" option? Because they're very different in Dropbox.
"Get Dropbox link" creates an HTML link to a static webpage. Dropbox normally displays this folder to the user like a spiffed-up version of an http directory listing. In some cases, such as a folder full of pictures, you may get extra functionality, such as a photo gallery-type layout, or the ability to preview audio files. "Share" actually shares the folder with another Dropbox user. Depending on permissions you set, the user you share the folder with can read, modify, and\or write to the folder. It would be good for something like planning a class reunion - if all planners use Dropbox, you can share one synced folder between them, for pictures, PDF brochures, Excel spreadsheets, etc. Some of these features require Dropbox Pro (like password protecting files within a shared folder, or having an expiration date for sharing). |

I have not used this but it might work:
https://iconverticons.com/online/ There are others. I searched "convert icns to jpg" |

THat seems complex.
1) Find neat image to steal. 2) Convert to .icns 3) Hi Opal, wherever you ended up. 4) like it 5) post to hosting site 6) Link to Reddit 7) So someone else can convert it to an .icns again. |

Try this:

I'm still not understanding the confusion. I just:
a) downloaded an icon of the Windows logo, in .ICO format. b) zipped it. c) put it in my Dropbox folder, right-clicked it and got the link. d) went to /r/MacIcons and created a test link post. e) downloaded it via a different browser (Edge) on the same computer. It's the post called "Testing: please ignore" here: https://www.reddit.com/r/macIcons/ |

I followed that link to reddit and clicked on the post labeled 'Testing: please ignore'. It popped up a window to download a file called Windows.zip. I saved it to my hard drive and opened it with archive manager to show a file called windows.ico. Which opens up to your standard evil empire four color flag.

FYI, I just clicked the link in Paul's subreddit, and was got this page (the screencap is cropped, but this is where all the action is):
http://i.imgur.com/bOjh3pE.png There was no login prompt. I clicked the "Download" button and was prompted to save a file called "Saudi Arabia Roundel Colour.icns", which I did. Doesn't do me any good on this Windows box, however. The link Paul posted here (as shown at the top of post #14) doesn't work, but the actual link on Reddit looks like the bottom link in post #14 . Here it is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/bw9zqjosun...lour.icns?dl=0 |
