I found the thread an interesting read. I don't have a problem with the question, either. There is so much bullshit about firearms in pop culture and even in the media (no shit, I heard an NPR announcer refer to Clyde Barrow's 1911 revolver.) that I see it good someone wanting to know what's real. Is the question ignorant? Yeah, but the SDMB for all it's snark and politics does do a decent job fighting ignorance. It's just taking them longer than they thought. Anyway, aren't most questions (rhetoric aside) ignorant by definition?

OK, maybe it's just me then. But I'd have thought common sense would tell you that not being hit by a bullet from a firearm wouldn't hurt you. Hell, if it were true it would replace the whole 'good guy getting grazed in the forehead' bullshit that you always see in bad movies.

I agree with you however that there is a lot of ignorance about guns in general. But this is not even a common misconception (At least I've never heard of it).

ETA: (orders Jackie some cranky)

I remember how The Man was called an idiot for starting a bunch of separate Dope snark threads instead of posting in the omnibus thread. He was an idiot. Hint hint.

All those welts and little red lines are caused by near misses, that's why the hero can recover from them by the next scene.

Especially the heroes with self repairing hair.
