I suggest Fenris takes that "snarkin' out of the titles from now on. It's grossly misleading.
Instead, replace "snarkin" with "we love polkas and old shit like that." |

Of course, even that's a point of nostalgia, now: I remember the difference between Oldies and Classic Rock because I remember when there were Oldies stations. See, Oldies includes Fifties and Early Sixties, with groups like Dion and the Belmonts and The Five Satins and other doo-wop music. That stuff is gone now. It is pretty much impossible to find the non-mega-hit pre-Beatles music on terrestrial radio these days, at least in smaller markets, and likely in bigger ones, too, given how, you know, old and dead the relevant demographic would be these days. It's all Classic Rock now, a format which includes Eighties Music at this point, which didn't used to be on the radio much at all when I was a kid. I don't mind that, but I do feel a bit of a twinge when I realize doo-wop has gone the way of Benny Goodman and Paul Whiteman, into the realm of Really Old Stuff Only Collectors Care About. |

I, for one, also noticed that doo-wop and its contemporary (r+b and rock-ish) pop music has disappeared and I am glad, for nostalgic reasons of my own. In the late 70s and very early 80s the stations would play the Beatles - all of them, all the time. Then, Oldies happened and my mom listened to them almost exclusively for the rest of the decade, and they played freakin doo wop and other old oldies and early Beatles and I don't mind if I never hear that again for the rest of my life because it was in lieu of mid to late Beatles and other rock from the mid to late 60s, which thankfully started reappearing in the 90s.
I didn't have the money to buy the stuff myself and even if I did have control of the radio dial which I didn't my only other choices were 80s pop and, toward the late 80s, classic rock which at the time also didn't play much of the 60s classic rock canon, instead favoring 70s and early 80s stuff. |

So many groups from that era (i.e. pre Beatles) were [name] and the [group]:
Dion and the Belmonts, Freddy and the Dreamers, Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Bill Hailey and the Comets. What was up with that? Back to snark. In the Chappaquiddick clusterfuck over in IMHO, DrDumbth gets wooshed and shows his absolut cluelessness proudly: Quote:

Yeeeah... to be honest, while lee is a melodramatic harpy and always was, in that thread, the ugly "shemale" and "OMG I can pretend i'm a kangaroo" shit regarding Kelly sprinkled throughout from various wags makes her OTT but harmless bullshit smell like roses in comparison. And sadly much of it comes from some GB posters (and Seven, who IIRC used to host, I think?).
That anti-trans vibe is pretty cringeworthy. Amazing how much has changed in 11 years, 'cause I don't think the good people who trotted that crap out would do that now. As usual, the best person in that thread is the much-missed Jodi. |

That's one thing that always kills me about these, "drugs are bad, mmkay" threads. Booze has done so much worse throughout the centuries. God knows I've seen it in my family. But we also saw what happens when you try to outlaw it.

Don't fucking call her a shemale. (Or a "man dressed as a woman," which someone also used.) Seriously, I understand that understanding about trans issues wasn't as rife eleven years ago (although frankly even then it was pretty ignorant not to get the concept--this wasn't the '70s for chrissakes). Now, in 2018? No excuses. C'mon, Fenris, you're better than that. (I have no idea about C2H5OH.) * Though with my psychologically aware hat on, I sympathize with the mindset that probably went behind it. I cannot even imagine the painful disconnect between knowing you're a woman and yet having to deal with physical reality that feels foreign and unnatural. The goofy womansperm concept was their workaround for this unhappy situation. |

I don't think it was so much the "workaround" as that they acted like it people should just take it as fact, even if they didn't know their back story. Like people would be like, "what do you mean, Kelly is the mother of your daughter, aren't you her mother? How did she impregnate you?" And then lee would bring up the womansperm thing, and get all pissy and insist, "yes, women can produce sperm!!!" Instead of just saying, "it's an inside joke between the two of us, because Kelly is trans." Which would've saved a LOT of confusion and arguments.

However, on someplace like the Dope that tends to be more accepting of such things than the population at large, something along the lines of "Kelly was pre-op and still fertile at the time. But since she's a woman, we called it woman sperm after a joke on 'Kids in the Hall'" would have explained the situation in a non-crazy way and eliminated a lot of the followup "WTF??" and "bitches be cray-cray" posts. And since you've ruined whipped cream for me forever... ::kabongs choie with her tiny violin:: |
