SlackjawINC isn't a conservative. He leans left and is an active campaign volunteer for Democratic candidates in his state. He also frequently advocates for left-leaning public policies in his posts at the Durp. The fact that he is a self-described 'paternalistic racist' just goes to illustrate that racism is orthogonal to the left-right spectrum. There's racists all across the spectrum. Admittedly, especially down south, there's more of 'em on the right, but that's due to historical stuff that makes Southerners a) more likely to be racist, and b) more likely to be conservative. It's two different circles on the Venn Diagram, but in the Bible Belt, those two circles have a very large overlap. Slackjaw doesn't live down south, and except for the racism is actually rather representative of the left side of his largely centrist upper mid-west state.

When my nephew (their first child, first grandchild on both sides of the family) was born, my brother was sort of creepy obsessive with the pictures and videos. We'd get tapes and wads of photos in the mail and he made an Angelfire site with hundreds of pictures of the kid that took forfuckingever to load because hello hundreds of images on dial-up. It also had a complete dossier on the kid's nicknames, favorite toys, favorite foods, and I forget what else. We were expected to absorb all this so when he called, we could speak knowlegably about his favorite subject. There are people I've known for decades whom I don't know as well as i did my nephew as a toddler.
