The Doop should change it's motto to: "Idiots yelling at their TVs."

That's a great idea, because that leaves "Idiots yelling at idiots yelling at their TVs" free for others to use.

This thread deals with the question of whether, should the police want to question you about something, you should decline to cooperate without an attorney present. Multiple posters have argued cogently that, as a general rule, the answer is "no".
Multiple other posters are screeching that "oh, so you're saying if your daughter is being raped while being driven away in a flaming car, you shouldn't call the police???1111" Durpers... |

As I understand it, she used to have a fairly high-powered executive position but lost it, presumably when some external bad thing happened (the economy tanked, or the industry she was in tanked, something like that). So she ended up, at least for the short term, as low level employee at a box store. Then her husband, who presumably always required more attention than many spouses due to his disability, got cancer, and after a long and painful illness he passed away. I could easily see someone making the decision to stick with the store clerk job in light of his illness - one might not want to make the investment of time and energy needed to find and maintain a higher level position, changing health insurance could be an issue, maybe the hours/flexible scheduling were especially conducive to taking care of him, whatever. I don't know what went into the decision to stay, but I can envision plenty of plausible scenarios where it would make sense. But. He passed away quite some time ago. And she is clearly an intelligent, articulate, well-read person (say what you like about her tendencies to exaggerate or have a tiresomely large repertoire of subjects in which she has exceptional expertise - on the whole, I find the information she shares interesting and entertaining, and I can cut a poster some slack if they embellish here and there or post in an authoritative voice they aren't entirely entitled to). So, why is she still at that same dead-end job? Particularly when it seems that she's enduring quite a bit of financial hardship that could be eased if only she had higher paying employment. I don't get the sense that it's because she's writing a novel and needs a low-stress job to keep her mind free, or anything like that. The only explanations that come to my mind are (a) she fucked up big-time at whatever her prestigious job was, to the extent that she'll never be hired again for a responsible position; or (b) she is the victim of some sort of mental illness she's not sharing (which is of course her right). Depression, perhaps? Yet, assuming most of the way she's characterized her life over the past few years is true, she's shown a pretty commendable ability to fight through quite a lot of adversity. I don't get the sense from her posts that she's depressed. Anyway, I have a soft spot for her. Sure, the rebeW story was pretty over the top, but it was kind of fun. I suspect I would enjoy Broomie if I knew her in real life. I wish her well, but she puzzles me. |

Won't they provide a lawyer if you can't afford one, or is that only if you're actually arrested? Because if so, then she's just full of shit.

For the first and only time, I agree with Tripolar. It sounds like an urban legend or modern version of the "there's only room for one more person in your bomb shelter. Do you take the 60 year old farmer with heart trouble, or the 20 year old yutz who's at least healthy" questions they used to annoy us with in high school.

A public defender is assigned in court during your arraignment hearing. Before that, all you can do is keep your mouth shut.

But if you're not under arrest, I mean, can you still ask for a lawyer? If they're just asking you questions.

You can ask for one, but you have to pay for it yourself. No public defender prior to being arrested and getting the Miranda warning.

Through a lot of January and February I would be sitting outside reading in the afternoon thinking, "Where the hell is winter? Why is it so damn hot out?" There were days and a few weeks where it was in the low to mid 80s. I'm not saying is not a sock. It probably is. Damn sawcks!!! ![]() |

He mentioned that he's posting from his phone today because he can't access the board from his computer. He probably re-registered from his phone when he was having trouble after the Discourse migration and forgot about it.

If you're not under arrest you give them your phone number and say, "I'll be happy to answer all your questions as soon as I talk to my lawyer". Then get up and walk away. If they won't let you walk away then you're under arrest and you stop talking. Personally I would answer questions related to a hot pursuit as long as the questions weren't about me. Anything else can wait until I talk to a lawyer.
