:: sniff :: Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson) died

At least TMZ is reporting his death of natural causes.

Weezy! I'm coming to join ya honey! With a zillion two-bit honkeys talking about me.

Nah, he was a great guy, if there was a black version of my dad it would be him.

Oh my God! Now, see? This proves my other thread! I swear he died years ago!

Didn't he have that show that had to be canceled because he died? No, I'm not thinking of John Ritter.

Sorry, my heart goes out to the Hemsley family and all who loved him, both now and the last time he died.

You were probably thinking of Redd Foxx, who died on the set of his last sitcom with Della Reese, called The Royal Family. It went on for awhile with the addition of Jackee Harry (ugh!) as his daughter, but was ultimately canceled.

And RIP, Mr. Jefferson/Deacon Frye.

At least he lived long enough to see himself go from tv star to dated reference to cult figure to cultural icon.

That's really sad. He was a very funny guy and all his characters really stood out when he was on the screen. And a class act in real life too.

I kinda sorta met him once. When people ask what famous people you've met, I don't count him because it wasn't a true, formal meeting, but...When I was in 8th Grade, he came to pick up one of my schoolmates at school. (Small, private school, only 7th and 8th grade in this building). He was standing outside this really fancy car (memory tells me a Bentley, but maybe I'm getting that confused with the character from the show) and we all just freaked the fuck out. OMG! It's Mr. Jefferson! Movin' on up!!

He just smiled and allowed us to roam around him and his car , gawking and giggling, buncha honky kids that we were.

Isn't his last name HEMsley not HELMsley? Brian Williams on NBC news and the Today Show news lady both said HELMsley. You'd think they would get it right.
