Yet another case of genuine durpitude that I initially took to be sarcasm. My eyes kept getting bigger reading this.

A revived thread on the Antikythera Mechanism shows dopers' admirably stubborn suspicion of foreign contrivances.

I've said I won't be back, and I won't be. No point making a persistent nuisance of myself. Those that want to doubt me and spend their time trying to spot Malacandra socks over at the SDMB are welcome to their fun, but if they won't take my word for it in advance that it's a waste of time, that's their look-out. |

So seeing the new posts in the bully thread (no, no link, been linked too many times in this thread, find it yourself you lazy bums), and seeing things like Nava say she was bullied by her mom and her toddler sister, I wonder how many respondents in that thread mistake normal human interaction, including good-natured joking, as bullying? I mean, we're talking about a group that has never seen a joke they couldn't be pedantic about, so I could easily see them mistake someone joking around with them as violent bullying.

iandy starts a "game". Doesn't explain it, doesn't tell the rules, GO! And how convenient that all his posts are earning points, he's also the score keeper, but no one else is.

It's been many, many years ago, but I remember reading a thread by some woman complaining about her in-laws and how they bullied her and it just made her livid, to the point of never wanting to interact with their sorry asses. Well, every description she gave just sounded like light teasing / joking / horsing around to try and include her, but it left her seething. I said nothing, but she got lots of support. |

No, I don't think so. It wasn't anyone's name I remember. Might even have been the time when I used to fall for 'new poster join date' types and take them seriously. Why? Did you post something similar? |

I think I remember this, it was a known poster and my impression was that she did have self awareness about different styles of family interaction. Her point was that she disliked the way her in-laws continually ragged on each other and her and didn't want her kids growing up like that. Sad really.

I think I remember it too. IIRC, she was upset because her when her mother-in-law picked up the baby and she started crying, her aunt made a joke that the baby obviously didn't like her. (And it WAS a joke, since both of them started laughing.)
It's too vague to search for, though. ![]() |
