I think your paradigm of moderation comes from the SDMB and Something Awful. But this board isn't them. And that type and level of moderation is overkill for a small board like this, IMO. I've watched two other off-shoot boards die out (well three if you count Domebo) because of overmoderation just like I see here. It's sad, really. But I do realize that you don't see it the same way and think that this board is really lightly moderated. But when the moderation mimics what the mods/admins post as posters, it just becomes an extension of the moderation.

(For all the posters who will be posting that this board is really lightly moderated. . .well, go for it. But it's not like you're saying anything new, novel or interesting, or even making a point. Of course you think that; you're generally agreeing with the status quo. But I think it's the differences that often make a message board interesting.)

I completely disagree that Giraffe's official role as mod/admin should prevent him from jumping in with fist flailing. I've never gotten the impression that you had to be careful how you address Giraffe because of his status as board owner. IMHO he has a right to call people anything he wants to here just as we have the same right. Unlike the Dope, we can criticize any and all mods as much as we want to.

I will agree with Roo that our Pit sucks. I think a lot of that is because we are such a small board. For that reason people seem to think that any criticism is too far and unneeded.

The fact is that Teela *did* just post about being 50K in debt and how she'd have to sacrifice savings and/or retirement money to bail out her husband who seems to make a habit out of being a spendy and lazy dick. People seemed to think that just because it's a hard time she was going through and posted about it here that makes it wrong to point out the "HUH?" of going to a 4star hotel with a guy who has holes in his pockets with HER money. When you post your dirty laundry online you may have it pointed out to you. Charles D. Allen did that. Of course, everybody has a right to tell him that he's a mean dick. But to pretend that it's beyond the pale to have a fairly reasonable opinion on a subject that someone chose to share here? Give me a break.

Hell, the Behind Your Back forum is full of threads making fun of people on the Dope for their words and actions. Take Stoid for instance. I can't stand that smug bitch and I *do* think her current situation is a result of poor choices she has made (repeatedly for some) over the years. She is her own worst enemy. Still, why is it okay to talk shit about her here and not about someone else who has made pretty questionable choices. Don't get me wrong, I like Teela and I was infuriated for her when she posted about her struggle. I like her.

But, why is she off limits but Stoid isn't? Too many of us post in both places to say that it's because Teela is here and Stoid isn't. It comes down to a little bit of mob mentality and a lot of who is popular amongst the posters. For that reason, I think there is some serious hypocrisy around here.

Finally, was there some mention of derailing a thread? Really? There are WAY more derailed threads on this board than ones that are not. Just to state the obvious at the outset, she's not off limits in any sort of official way. Charles was well within the rules to post what he did in a Pit thread.

But for me personally, Charles' post was not the usual calling-someone-on-their-bullshit type of post that are indeed sometimes a necessary part of online interaction. Someone complains about being in debt after running up a huge credit card bill and then immediately post about going to a fancy hotel? Callworthy bullshit. Expressing anguish at discovering your husband's secret financial fuckery, but deciding to try to work it out and later mentioning having a weekend away at a nice hotel? Not callworthy bullshit, IMO. Now, if teela came back and posted that she had just cosigned on a huge line of credit for her husband and was trusting him to manage it responsibly, by all means, I'd expect people to bring up her past thread to point out she was being a dolt.

Add in Charles' history as a Snackpit-reposting drama queen, and the whole thing just felt to me like someone being a dick for no reason other than to get some attention / create some drama. Hence my personal take on it. But I of course didn't expect that to automatically be the final word on the matter.

But, in her original post she indicated she was probably going to have to do a home equity line of credit. She also mentioned that he was nearly retirement age and they still have a mortgage so I'd say he fucked them (especially her) ten ways from Sunday no matter what way you look at it.

She didn't elaborate it other than to say that it is now taken care of. A reasonable assumption would be that either the line of credit was taken out or retirement was touched. Either way, it's a terrible terrible place to be in at that age. So, IMHO, I can see why the 4star hotel was questioned.

Charles wasn't the only one who questioned it in the Pit thread but he was the only one who got the attitude from people.

I think Sleeps is right. We don't have a vibrant Pit mostly because we are a smaller board, but also because IMO not many of us can be arsed. Sure I get peeved by some of the stuff I read, but it's momentary or I figure I can't be bothered to engage in the thread. I come here to have fun, not sharpen my debate skills.

One of the reasons the Dope wore on my nerves finally (although I do still post there upon occasion) was precisely because of the petty fights and "gotchas!" that seemed to prevail there for awhile. For all I know, they still do. The moral police over there are ridiculous.

Sure, Teela (or anyone else) can be asked to 'splain stuff like the 4 star hotel after the $50k loss. That's just common sense. But does it have to be in a douchy way?

I think most of the posters in that thread were responding more to the tone of Charles' posts than the actual question he asked.

Would it be a help or hindrance if I were to come in and say that the hotel was $129 a night? Which, BTW, has since been completely refunded by courteous and professional hotel manager. Truly, Sacramento is a destination to select if one's means have been recently reduced as ours is. Our activities were: driving around looking at orchards and rice paddies, bird-watching at a couple of national wildlife preserves and eating at a taqueria for dinner. So we were aware of our new budget and staying well within it.
